Look at the Unreal Tournament games. all kinds of diversity in there but that wasnt' the focus. The focus was on being the most badass game in the galaxy, and they succeeded.
I have no context for Veliguard or anything, but that table scene everyone kept making fun of was genuinely horrible and embarrassing. I've seen rewrites that have the same message behind it but handled a lot better.
