What is your favorite Linux Distro?
and why?

I am currently using Debian. The simplicity and GNOME shell extensions allow me to make my preferred desktop experience and the fact that it's debian means almost everything I need is supported.

Manjaro, it's basically Arch but less fussy and more suited towards day-to-day productivity tasks imo.

I used regular Arch for a while- but after maybe a year all my packages started breaking because updates and inconsistencies.
I could have gone around fixing it all- but I decided the fuss was too much lol

What is the best Linux Distro for a tech-illiterate uncle?

Mint , Ubuntu or PopOS

My mom who is very tech illiterate has been using Ubuntu for 2 years now. It's great for browsing the web/checking email / organizing photos etc.

FreeBSD
Oops, that's not a penguin. Silly me :D

Anyway, AmongOS is only for the giggles and I'm currently using CachyOS (based on Arch) both on the desktop and on the T430s with KDE Plazma and a recompiled kernel. When my desktop will be repurposed into a server, then I might switch to Debian or based one.

In short, it doesn't matter and I just want it to work.

I've been meaning to try FreeBSD. How is it for gaming? I don't game as heavily as I used to- but it would be a shame to waste this 5800x3D and 4070ti completely.

Excuse me sir, the only drama I want in here is distro wars.

Have you considered switching to Linux?

Thank you, that answers my question very well.
When Microsoft finally goes off the deep end I'm going to get my mom into Mint or Ubuntu.

Sorry about that, I'll stop. He'll have to come back to the other thread but I think he might be ashamed.

No problem. I think these days Linux is better than windows for simplicity. It can be like a frog boiling in water and it can be easy not to notice how convoluted w11 truly is with all the subscriptions and settings menus and pop-ups.

The problem with FreeBSD is that there is no Steam client, so you have to use one for Windows or Linux. I tried to run one for Windows, downloaded Wine, but Wine-Proton was missing for some reason, but the client refused to work. There is a partial solution that I think should work when Proton is missing. I could just use the DXVK dlls, which would do the job.
I could also use a third party launcher similar to Lutris, but meh.
And it's terrible for laptops.
But the OS and packages were more snappier than the Linux I use, so hopefully BSD will mature in the next 5 years.

There's a real possibility Linux will go corporate and I'll have to abandon it for BSD.

I already do 2/3rds of my gaming through Lutris.

To a some point, both are already corporate.

I could have tried to run RPCS3 on FreeBSD, given that it is already supported natively, but I missed to do so.
