There wil alwasy be ppl that for whatever reason dont have a job or cant even work if they wanted to and you want those ppl to have decent income/life as well.
If not your getting it back in higher costs for national medical care , ppl migth have to resort to crime and so on.
When unions was stronger, a normal person working at a car plant in USA could earn like $75 000 in 1970s adjusted for inflation.
I'm pondering what exactly you think is "ironic" about this.
You left out the crucial part of the "taxation without representation" expression, the "representation" aspect. In other words, they had no power over who got to decide to tax them. That's why they rebelled.
Also, tipping is not a tax. The IRS will not arrest you if you refuse to tip 13% to your Hooters waitress. Though I find it hilarious that's what Europeans actually believe.
Although I must say, I'm quite happy due to the fact that I don't have to shop for insurance plans nor do I have to wonder whether or not I'm being overcharged by for-profit companies just to have the healthcare that I want or need.
Statistics show an American pays double price for the healthcare as any other resident in any Western country.
If they survive that is.
You live in Vancouver and illegally buy stuff here to save ~8% on sales tax even though that money is supposed to help everyone in your State and you clearly can afford to drive here? Understandable, everyone you mention it to would probably do the same if we lived in Washington.
You don't want to pay 10%-20% in addition to your bill even though tip credit is illegal in Oregon and (most of) Washington meaning they can't possibly be paid less then you? You are cheap and frankly shouldn't be eating out if you can't afford this "optional" payment.
