What is the purpose of the point shop?
Like video games seems to have point shop in which you can spend point shop for certain stuff, but what is actually the point of the point shop in first place?

To steal back 2/3 of your points, of course...

Buying useless cool stuff

See my little fish? That
to act as an incentive to buy on the steam client and not through a key reseller like GMG or Fanatical.

Entice users to spend Mo'MONEY (for Steam to bank) just for those useless points, mostly.

and of course for possessive little imps to farm points.

I just looked at mine and my balance is 58,911 points.

The stuff isn't that bad but I would rather have options for cash discounts, in-game skins, DLC, micro transactions. But a Cash Discount would be a big win for me and I never understood why valve won't have such a system.

That's very simple: the points have no monetary value, so anything that needs real money to buy would come out of Valve's pockets.

And Steam is big enough so they don't need a customer-loyality program. Not one that actually costs them money, anyway.

This has been debated to death over the years and I have been leading the charge in many of the threads for cash discounts but to my surprise, I found so many steam gamer's are against any loyality reward program.
It provides an excuse to never provide coupons ever again.
To take your money and points. In order to buy a lot of the stuff, like the backgrounds, you need to own the game. Boo. 👎😒

Oh, they can also close down the shop for games that have been delisted because heaven forbid we get nice things sometimes.

And it can happen without warning.

Sure, I take a loyalty-reward program any time. It's just that Steam doesn't need one, so they are not doing it. It's their decision, not mine.

At the end of the day, such programs are meant to eventually increase income. If that doesn't happen for Steam because people are buying the games anyway, whether they get a reward or not, then it just cuts into profits.
