"Why shouldn’t Cleopatra be a melanated sister? And why do some people need Cleopatra to be white? Her proximity to whiteness seems to give her value, and for some Egyptians it seems to really matter.

After much hang-wringing and countless auditions, we found in Adele James an actor who could convey not only Cleopatra’s beauty, but also her strength. What the historians can confirm is that it is more likely that Cleopatra looked like Adele than Elizabeth Taylor ever did.

As production got nearer, I realized the magnitude and political nature of this job. It was important to get things right, but also to find a way of telling the story with humanism and nuance: The last thing we needed was another Cleopatra divorced from her womanhood and her power only sexualized. The HBO series “Rome” portrayed one of the most intelligent, sophisticated and powerful women in the world as a sleazy, dissipated drug addict, yet Egypt didn’t seem to mind. Where was the outrage then? But portraying her as Black? Well.

Perhaps, it’s not just that I’ve directed a series that portrays Cleopatra as Black, but that I have asked Egyptians to see themselves as Africans, and they are furious at me for that. I am okay with this.

While shooting, I became the target of a huge online hate campaign. Egyptians accused me of “blackwashing” and “stealing” their history. Some threatened to ruin my career — which I wanted to tell them was laughable. I was ruining it very well for myself, thank you very much! No amount of reasoning or reminders that Arab invasions had not yet happened in Cleopatra’s age seemed to stem the tide of ridiculous comments. Amir in his bedroom in Cairo wrote to me to earnestly appeal that “Cleopatra was Greek!” Oh, Lawd! Why would that be a good thing to you, Amir? You’re Egyptian."

-Director Tina Gharavi

The reference to Amir is the archeologist who uncovered Cleopatra's tomb and lead expert in Egypt on Cleopatra

The film industry has sucked for the past decade, why are you guys still surprised when a show tanks

Feel like BlackRock will just bail them out if the company in question promises to push enough diversity.
Forbes lol

They said the exact same thing about Breaking Bad and The Sopranos. Two amazing shows which are still earning more each year globally, that forbs has ever earned in the past 100 years.

Both shows have received to many awards and accolades to even list without writing a whole book on the subject.

I will check the show out and form my own opinion, but so far it just seems a bunch of people with no life are mad that the actress playing Cleopatra is black, and they claim the real Cleopatra was white or Chinese or something. Whatever.

Imagine how many TV shows and movies are not historically accurate documentaries, right down to he DNA of the actors lol
Netflix only makes crap content.
Wasn't there some french movie about little girls that got bombed to oblivion? Can't imagine anything being worse than that.
Love it when faux intellectuals assault us with a wall of text calling everyone racist when people just don’t want anybody to rewrite history. If they were really so smart they would see the danger in manipulating the past.
Had it not been presented as a documentary, the backlash wouldn’t have been as bad as it is now

I can agree on that, no one would of cared. But of course wall of text guy will neglect that and just call us all racist while he’s okay with insane people rewriting our history.

In all honesty, he’s just watering down the word racism. I doubt these types even know what real racism is anymore.

That is most likely true.
Nobody cares about fictional takes on history (Alternative history)

There have been lots of awful cleopatra movies and series and those that some people think is correct is also very misrepresentated, I recko that Cleopatra would have had an olive skintone.

I don't read those big walls lol. But yeah if this was some low budget crappy movie or show instead of a documentary you would still have blacklash (and rightly so if ya ask me) but it wouldn't have been so extreme to the point of having Egyptians filing a lawsuit :steamlaughcry:

Probably a factor yeah
Remember the time Forbes had an article about a Netflix series?

They should make a Netflix series of that.
Messaggio originale di Василиса:
All netflix shows are equally terrible - no big surprise.
Sorry but gonna have to say that edgerunners, stranger things, super crooks and black mirror are not on the same quality level of cleopatra.

But whatever opinions opinions your right and I’m right and your wrong and I’m wrong.
