I usually am not even able to play jrpgs because I fall asleep literally, if I try to play them I start to feel numb and then fall asleep after a few minutes, with very few exceptions, so I have been able to finish this one so it is less bad than most others I guess, but the story at least for me it was really unexciting and uninteresting. The main quest to me felt like a huge waste of time.
The graphics were good but I would not say that it was one of the best looking game ever.
1. Positively enormous roster of unique party members with their own character designs, strengths, weaknesses, synergies and often some additional non-combat utility (for example, a guy who fixes the broken elevator in your base so you can move around better). Most JRPGs have somewhere around 6 to 15 or so. Suikoden games have 108 minimum. Many of these are hidden, missable or you choose one of two for the playthrough.
2. Multiple distinct combat systems that make for really satisfying encounters. In the first two games there were three: party-based combat, duels and strategy battles. What makes this work so well is that important parts of the story or particularly important villains can actually have multiple of these systems in succession. My favorite example is a boss in S2 that you first defeat on the battlefield, then as a party of six vs one, then finally in a duel.
3. It just does a lot of things differently. If you're used to other really popular TBRPGs, some things feel right at home but a number of things are refreshingly different. For example, the story is usually a war story instead of a save the world from an overpowered bad guy story. They also manage both inventory and magic a little differently than most of the others. Plus, it's got a pretty unique aesthetic with Chinese-inspired clothing and such.
Ok, thanks. Those first two are for the PS1 right?
I'm pretty sure I won 20k against Mike but he won't join me...
To be fair, I think I faced it much later than I was supposed to since it went down in two hits. Two good hits, mind you. But still.
At first it was like eh
Then it grew on me
Now back to eh
I think what it was more than anything was the Thomas chapters ruled, lol. Geddoe is ok too but the other two characters not so much. I mean, I think they're ok characters and all but their stories are just so go here do that. After their first chapters, that is.
That and, well, I've pretty much done all the bosses and dungeons three or four times apiece. At a minimum. >_>
I think I'm about to finish Chris Chapter 3, which since I'm finished with Hugo chapter 3, means all that will be left is Geddoe chapter 3 and whatever comes after that.
Then again, I've been assuming I was about to finish Chris Chapter 3 for like half of Chris Chapter 3...
I just started chapter 4, for reference.
After leveling until I pretty much can't anymore (everyone 59 except Geddoe 64), I just can't handle the damage output and the spell interruptions. Even with maxed magic resistance.
