Children can learn things more effortlessly because their developing brains are able to take in information around them at an inhuman pace. Older people have to put in effort to learn things but it doesn't mean they CAN'T learn anything. Often times older people are just done with life and don't give a sh!t to know anything new but they still can.

But here's the things. Despite children having inhuman learning speeds, there's still dumb kids out there. The same goes for older people, while there's a bunch of set-in-their-ways stubborn older people, there are also older people who can and are willing to learn new things.

The only difference is effort required if one wants to learn and the cognitive abilities of the older person, they can learn either faster or slower than the expected learning rates and it's usually sufficient enough to keep up with changing times if they're willing.

I think I'll have to disagree that they have "inhuman" learning speeds. That could only be the case if they weren't human...

In theory they should have the ability to learn faster than adults, that is true.

It is also true that there are people out there that never took advantage of their learning capabilities while younger, preferring to run amuck - and then they grow up and realise they wasted their life and now they pump gas for a living.

Personally, I believe one should always strive to learn while alive. Anyone not willing to do that is holding back the species and should kindly remove themselves from the gene pool, freeing up resources for those more inclined toward self improvement.

Children are sponges for information.
Whether it's balancing a taxsheet or catfishing-online or catfishing-in-a-river.

Skills you learn hunting jackrabbits isn't useful today - but was before.

If the society in question has true equal opportunity, then a smart person born poor can achieve great things.

Actually this is also true even without true equal opportunity - it's just more difficult for anyone not born into the right background/privelege in those cases.

But true equal opportunity is not a gatekeeper - if everyone has the opportunity (including but not limited to the same education, that education being both available and affordable for everyone), then those that do not take the opportunity have no one to blame but themselves (at least once they're old enough to accept responsibility for their own actions, which these days seems to be something people don't want to do any more).
