How crazy was Crysis?
Remember Crysis? Remember the hype for it? Those graphics? Pioneered "next-gen" rendering techniques like Ambient Occlusion, Sub-Surface Scattering, Parallax Occlusion Mapping, HDR with Tonemapping, Color Grading, Volumetric Lighting, Volumetric Cloud Simulation, etc..

It's actually insane that they did all this back in 2007. Sometimes I like to consider HL2 the first "next-gen" game, but the same could easily be said for Crysis.

Share your memories of this landmark title in computer graphics. I remember buying a brand new 8600GT just to play the game on medium settings at 1024x768 at barely 30fps and it was still the best looking game I had ever seen. I remember endlessly playing with cvar files just trying to enable one more effect before my graphics card caught fire. Those were the days.

And Crytek announced a Crysis 4 as well. Curious what the story will be.

I only hope the game fully leverages the latest generation of consoles and PC hardware to deliver visuals that are truly stunning, breathtaking, like that first game was back in '07. That was so much fun, even though nobody could run the game properly until years after release.
Do you guys remember that YouTuber Maxishine who built like a $5000 Q6600, tri-SLI 8800GTX rig just to play the game at max settings? What a time to be alive.

It's funny how the remaster isn't much better looking.
Some more accurate lighting, added foliage... and it's 15 years later.

They really achieved something back then.
At least we've finally reached the point where every game looks as good as Crysis. It only took like a decade.
I really really liked Crysis, and I'm not a big FPS guy. I hated the last few Dooms and FEAR.
Still haven't played #2. I should look into that.

i find it stupid when people play the game in max setting in 4k using rtx 4090 and call it unplayable because it run on 120 fps instead of 300 fps

also i'm just not aware of the popularity of the game in term of benchmarking. i'm too young to know that

Crysis actually offers a really fun semi-tactical FPS experience with a focus on dynamic AI and emergent gameplay. There's really nothing else like it on the market rn, Far Cry games are probably the most similar, but very dumbed down.

Like a lot of old games, Crysis is limited by your processor's single thread speed.

Also Crysis is older than me so I was able to run it when I first played last year

Game never really takes off and the last third of the game was basically a tutorial with 10 enemies total. Realistically the demo level at the start was the best part of the game. Crazy to think it would be up there with the titans of today's modern releases in terms of pacing and novel content.

They also took a lot of lighting and shubbery effects out before release.

I was there back in the day. I was at the tender age of thirteen and just starting to play with PC hardware. I had just upgraded my graphics card to an ATi x1600 and was amazed at how Crysis just demolished that card that ran HL2 and Doom 3 just fine. I knew right then and there it was time for another GPU upgrade.

Game genuinely sucks once the Aliens show up. Assaulting military bases in the jungle and fighting Koreans was fun.

Edit: I know they downgraded the graphics because the pre-release demo has the best graphics, longer draw distances, etc.. and they downgraded the graphics with every patch. Look at the textures on the mountains in my screenshots. They don't look that crisp with v1.2 patch.

Yeah, some people were going nuts over it. Talk about it melting computers and such.

Never was interested in it myself, but that's because I wasn't into FPS games much anymore around then and graphics never were an actual selling point for me.

Looks kinda outdated to me
But does it look as outdated as unmodded S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl? Which came out that same year. Bioshock 1, which runs on the frigging Unreal Engine 2, came out that same year. COD4, which runs on the Quake 3 engine came out that year. All these games were completely antiquated next to Crysis. Crysis was like something from the future.

I think MGS5 is the only game with comparable ai today, and even they they're a little bit limited by the engagement distances in that game. Crysis really punished you for alerting an outpost chain too early. Great tactical gameplay though, especially the way huts and furniture would gradually collapse and complicate every aspect of a fight.

The graphics downgrades bugged me a lot honestly. 22fps vs 30 wasn't really worth it compared to what was lost.

There were also the large scale multiplayer maps and scalable objective design with day/night cycle too. Could set a large conquest game two or three times the size of the average battlefield map to last 7+ irl days. Really thought multiplayer was going to be nuts in another decade or so.
