They went to work and the companies got tax credits for putting up with them.

I was a special ED kid, went to the child's mental hospital too.

I refused to get a special ed high school diploma though. So I did everything possible to get out of anything special ed in high school.

In special ed they told us lies, like that regular ed was much harder, that you couldn't handle it.

I liked regular ed more. Once I was back in it.

I got put in special ed in like elementary school, or first grade or something. Because I acted out.

When I finally got into high school, I was like a stranger to everyone. Because no one except my cousin and some of the special ed kids knew me.

After high school you just do normal things. Try to get a job. Go to college. But you can lack the connections regular ed people have.
I met up with one special ed guy i knew in high school. He works at a local grocery store as a bagger. Not a glorious job but it's an honest job.

There was a special ed kid I knew back in my school.

I later spotted him years later working at a super-market and he remembered me instantly, super friendly and super helpful. He utterly enjoyed that job and seeked helping others out. He was a perfect fit for it.

Yeah same, but they excel at it and enjoy so much. Just give them a honest job with a repeating pattern and they will go for it. Probably be the best employee there.

Depends on the severity of the educational needs. Many may be able to get to live fairly independently, even if it may require a little longer or extra support along the way.

Unfortunately a sizeable amount will require significant supports, from family, assisted living, charities, governments, etc.
I'm actually a case manager for individuals with developmental disabilities and autism. Depending on the individual's disability severity, they often either go to work and live regular lives with supports in place or they work in "pre-vocational" facilities to learn job skills and earn some sort of income. They often have to be subsidized with social security, even if they can work competitively as the jobs they are working usually aren't skilled. Although there are exceptions. For example, I have one guy on my caseload with autism who is a straight up welder. Probably has a Steam account too. But he is an outlier.

Of course, this only applies to the U.S.. I have no idea about how other countries operate.

Lucky, we got all the group home <80s that don't do anything. They absolutely use their disability as an excuse to do less than what is expected.

they get bounced around patently arbitrary job placement programs, often tasked with work that's a waste of everyone's time at best. gradually they come to understand that all work is just this, it's just more obvious when people assume you're an idiot.
