You can absolutely convey emotion and meaning through composition alone, but it is significantly easier to just say what you mean, or in the case of the overwhelming majority of music artists, to sing it. Appreciation and enjoyment is in the eye of the beholder. I like a bit of both.

They help with finding music you only partially recall. Imagine trying to find Vorel by Russian Circles without remembering the name of the band or song. Meanwhile if I'm like "What was that song that goes 'not everything that goes around comes back around you know'?" then I just put that in google and now I know it's Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stone Age.
