Do you prefer sad or happy endings?
Personally, stories like Neon Genesis Evangelion prove that dark endings can elevate a story if done correctly.

A work shouldn't be trying to do either one.
You mean the massage thing?

Sad ending.
Sad endings do feel a lot more realistic to me, but it doesn't really make any difference unless and until I get truly into the story and its characters; To me, it's about them and far less about the story.

I guess, I do prefer happy stories because I won't feel much of a negative impact on my mood afterwards, but a positive one instead, leading to happy emotions.
So you consider people giving their congratulations and clapping to be a dark ending? Do the world a favor and never try for baby. People are going to want to congratulate you, often. Plus what happens when the brat becomes the school's star champion athlete and scores four touchdowns in one game?

Also, I mildly prefer a happy ending but I don't care about it so long as the ending is satisfyingly conclusive and makes sense. That's also why I dislike most of the Ghibili films I have watched so far. They always leave you wondering what just happened and as if the story isn't even finished.

A good movie needs four things: a hero, a villain, a romance and a happy end. :steamhappy:
I wonder if there was a movie where hero and villain had a romance and it ended well.

Probably:

Hero is good guy. Villainess is main villain's underling. They fall in love, but can't act upon it because they are enemies.

Either the Hero causes villainess to see the error of her ways, or the main villain betrays her. She joins forces with the hero to defeat the main villain.

Ex-Villaness's misguided crimes are swept under the rug somehow or Hero and Ex-Villainess flee the law to live out their retirement happily together in some exotic paradise beyond their original government's jurisdiction, like Fiji.

Sounds vaguely like something I may have seen before.

I'm on team happy. Sad endings leave the movies or series incompleted. And there seems to be more sad endings now.
Anything is fine as long as it's reasonable.
In games multiple endings is better. I can choose my type of endings.
Possibly my favorite book is The Silmarillion.

Pathos is a potent device.

Anyone else think the Lay of Leithian would make a nice Disney Animated Feature?

As long as they keep Peter Jackson and Amazon far away from it. They'd think audiences wouldn't accept the Princess soloing Sauron and pull some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ where Huan summoned the power of nature and vines grabbed him or something.
Bittersweet ones usually hit the spot.

I like twist ending where it looks like it ends tragically but then they come back and win.so good
I hate "and they all lived happily ever after" endings. Fairy tales are for children.

I think the worst ending ever was Game of Thrones. It was like a firework that didn't go off. 6 seasons of buildup for that. Very disappointed.

Depends what you mean with sad...

But now that I think about it... In Japan, sad endings almost never end well (when it comes to ppl reactions and stuff)... 🤔

This gives me Mirai Nikki flashbacks... 🤔

The time where ppl ACTUALLY found yanderes appealing... 🙄
I prefer endings where viewers decide if the ending they got is happy or depressing.

But then it would not be the same, if you know the ending is going to be sad or happy, It would be kinda pointless to watch it 🤷‍♀️
