How did you all get over the fear of driving?
34 super depressed and this could fix my life, never had freedom like a car.
How did you all get over that fear of i cant afford if something happens? Like a accident or something. How do you all surpass that fear of what if? The courage to push even with that just isn't there for me.

Just do it.

1. The more you do it the better you will be, and your fear will go away. I had a fear of flying. I decided to fly as much as possible so my fear will go away. It did.

2. Let go of control, because the reality is we don't have much control in life. If you get into an accident and die, it was meant to be. Just like if I took a flight, and that flight ended in a crash it was meant to be and I had ZERO control over this.

Never had a fear. I've been driving for over 20 years. Never had an accident.

Mostly driving with a students licence at sixteen first, then on my own since I was eighteen with an actual driving licence. Constantly driving in and around the big cities here where stop signs and red lights are just suggestions to everyone else gets you comfortable with the ebb and flow of driving. Having been in a few car accidents also shakes off any doubts too.

When I was in high school I worked part time / full time on weekends and got a dirt bike (outright cash, no loans) since there were lots of wooded areas where I lived - the transition was pretty easy, just using the hand shifter vs using the foot lever. No real fear outside of other id10t drivers out to smash into me...

Here's hoping it stays that way for you.

Whiplash is not fun.

I wasn't fearful. The future will work itself out no matter what you imagine.

1984 bang - first time - done.

Man up!

Who told you to be fearful?

First time driving or first time having been in a car accident?

My brain isn't working tonight. :sadpug:

Ney bother: I was speaking to OP :-) Sorry for the confusion :-)

I did actually quote him ;-)

I passed my test in '84 and nobody told me I needed to worry about it.

I heard this before and I disagree, but I see the logic. My issue is that it assumes fear is replaced with hubris.

You can recognize and respect the danger of driving without fearing it.

The provisional licence period, where a fully licensed driver has to be in the passenger seat.

A trusted family member who is a good teacher is worth a zillion hours of drivers ed classroom study.

Get insurance.

If your issue is being at fault for something and having to pay. That is what insurance is for.

Other than that, practice. When driving don't allow yourself to be distracted. Be hyper aware of the road and pedestrians. In cities I would watch for shadows between parked cars for kids running out.

The key is being hyper aware. Don't mess with phone. Don't chat with people and look away from the road. Always expect people around you to be stupid and do dumb things.

What do you think about the OP's question?

It sounds like they have money issues.

IDK I would suggest a used beater that runs good so they can have minimal insurance and no payments so they can save for any repairs if needed.

New cars come with bank loans often making full coverage insurance a must and costly.
Taking some automotive classes so they can change tires and their own oil would probably be a big cost savings as well.

It's right to be fearful of the cost of owning a car. I've seen a lot of people get something sporty when a cheaper to run and repair car would have suited them much better.

I've never bought a new car myself. Worked on my own cars as well and paid in full up front for everything. My insurance is only 96 usd for 6 months. It was 150 when I had two cars.
