They're lonely because they never feel like doing anything most of the time.

i seriously doubt atari, nintendo, sega were able to do that, even ps would be unable to do what you suggest

i say it is more because internet, tv

Not what the data shows.

I don't think people are lonely because they don't feel like doing anything- I think they're lonely because they feel like doing something else, which is a usually a solitary activity. If they were truly doing nothing, they'd be content staring at a wall for that time- I doubt the 50%+ of people reporting loneliness would prefer what's the equivalent to solitary confinement without leisure

Even if it's another kind of escapism- it's still escapism. Videogames are just now the most common media-based escapism.

I however will say that we probably wouldn't be seeing the reverse Flynn effect[www.popularmechanics.com] if people were reading instead of gaming
