Why do fedoras get such a bad reputation?

It's funny, cause for a while, I wore fedoras, but back in college, in the early 2010s. Mind you, I wasn't aware of the "alpha incel neckbeard" reputation that such individuals had, who tended to wear a fedora. In college, most people actually complimented my fedora, but I didn't wear it just because.

I'm a dancer, and it was sort of part of my "gimmick" so to speak. I tend to use it as a prop often in my dancing, though don't really wear it actively anymore these days, seeing as wearing hats often apparently increases baldness, and I'm already having male pattern baldness. But I always found it strange that wearing it by itself causing people to immediately assume the worst, just because of the individuals who thought it made them "look good". I'm guessing it can work, but it actually has to look good on you. Otherwise, you do just come off as one of those "neckbeards".

It only looks good on some people who can pull it off. It looks goofy af on everyone else because they are making a weak attempt at trying to look sophisticated even though the rest does not match.

Oh, I'm aware of that, but my reasoning was never based on that stuff. To me, for my dancing, it's pretty practical as a prop, to act as an extension of my body when I try to improve my reflexes, but hardly a regular staple of any of my outfits. Hence why I was confused when I first learned of its association with neckbeards and try-hards, since I can't even see it being practical to actually wear everyday, even if one was trying to "look good".

I suppose a fedora is a "manly" hat that lends it's self better to dancing than, say, a stovepipe.

It's fashion. Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and ignore haters. If you like the item then that's all that matters.

I mean if I wanted to wear a fedora I would... I do like the hat...

but first off I just don't really wear hats... and if I did it wouldn't probably either be a fedora or a gator skin because I'm actually edgy AF a lot of the time... but I don't wear hats and I don't need a hat to complete me.

I don't feel that need to advertise I guess.

to me a hat is a utilitarian item I use when I mow the lawn to avoid sunburn.

Iggy I've got about six small fedoras -- they're technically called a "porkpie" when they have a smaller brim like mine do.

Good hats are one of the best things about 1950s photos. Children wore baseball caps. Men wore good hats.

You have to be cool to bring back a fashion item that is out of style, and most people who wear them are not, no offense. (I'm not cool enough to pull it off either.) So fedora wearers look like they are trying way too hard, which is strike two. Fedoras don't go with many types of clothing other than suits, so it looks like random hipster ♥♥♥♥. Strike three.

It's an uphill battle, no normal man can win.

I mean, initially, I wore mine with a black blazer and jeans. Although it already somewhat worked for me, but the blazer and jeans helped.

However, it was mostly for my dancing and was rarely part of a regular get-up. So yeah, not exactly an item that one would or should regularly dress in. And mine is probably more a trilby. I know Indiana Jones's hat is what a proper fedora looks like. Too big for me though.
