Changing .ZIP file into VPK file only shows "root"
I was trying to change a VPK file into a ZIP file so I could remove some files and then change it back into a VPK file, but when I renamed the ZIP file to a VPK file, opening the VPK file in GCFscape only shows "root" and nothing else

Uh... how were you trying to do this?

You can't just rename the extension. A ZIP file is a proprietary compressed file format. According to this, a VPK is not compressed.

https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/VPK

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZIP_(file_format)

According to the link, below: "In addition to GCF files, GCFScape also supports Half-Life BSP, NCF, PAK, VPK, WAD, and XZP files." I don't see mention of that application being able to edit or convert .zip files, but I'm not familiar with that app.

I don't know the application, but "traditionally" you would need to unzip the .zip file, preferably in its own directory and scanning it prior for malware, and/or not allowing executables to be unpacked, then remove the files you didn't want and then repack it as a VPK file format.

I can't recall, atm, if you can create an uncompressed .zip file.

Again - I don't know the application FCFscape nor what you're trying to do, just thought I'd give you some kind of answer. :)

you need some type of prebuilt tool to do a pass over the file to convert it to a different format, renaming it won't work unless that's a built-in feature of the application you're trying to use.
