Never going to happen. For starters, American Football is by far the most popular sport in the US. It is less so in Canada, but besides American influence, Canada also has its own version (very similar, but still) of football, and in any case, the most popular sport is ice hockey instead. Soccer has a much smaller viewship in both countries, and is so far popularly largely considered a youth (and often, stereotypically, for girls) sport in both.

Nothing wrong with that (besides the sport's stereotype of being for girls), as NA sports cultural norm is very different from Europe. More violence in the field - and ironically, much better behaved spectators (hooliganism is a thing in Europe and Latin America).

Also, not the entire world outside NA calls soccer "football". Australia and New Zealand call it soccer (Australia has their own version of gridiron football), as does Japan and southernmost countries in Africa.

Italy does not even use either, they call it "Calcio", as do a number of other countries that have their own local name for it.
Calcio means "kick". So the closest word in English is actually football. You call it football and you are holding it with your hands. :steammocking:

Closest word in English would be "Kick" or "Kicking", using the same analogy.

And there are times where the ball is actually kicked in gridiron football, as much as there are times where balls are thrown with the hands in association football.

And in any case, this all comes down to semantics and history - the origin of the name "football" being it to describe any sports that involve kicking a ball; back then no version of the sport was particularly dominant over the other.

Hence, you had "rugby football", "association football" (from which the term soccer derives), and so on. As specific versions these eventually became the dominant sport in specific areas, the term football became associated with these versions in these areas.

The term "soccer" was used to varying degrees in the UK until the 1950s, in fact. Of course, by then, association football was by far the most popular version in the UK, even if it happens to be still somewhat good at rugby (funny thing that it can invent so many great team sports but not be a particularly good winner at any of them lol), so that helped a lot in that transition.

Association football is by far the most popular version "exported" to other non-anglophone countries, so there was never any need to differentiate it from other versions elsewhere.

There is no analogy. In Italian, calcio doesn't only mean "kick". In sports contest, it's something you do by "kicking a ball", therefore the word "football" is closer to something you do while kicking a ball. This includes running while kicking a ball. Your "football" is a diminutive of "American football" or "Gridiron". Here in Europe we just call it "American football", in Italian "calcio americano".

I can assure that there's a low amount of people who refer to american football as gridiron football. It is indeed gridiron football, you are right, but what i meant by it not being entirely true was your claim that it's the american name. The term gridiron football is not universally known or spoken by americans besides rarely being brought up by football commentators, so it's not culturally american to call it gridiron football. It's merely a technical term. It is the correct term to describe the sport though. I don't watch canadian football and i'm not really a technical person as you can tell from my original post so yeah that's not a concern for me to call it north american football for the sake of being correct.

I've never heard of the IFAF, but i have heard of the NFL which stands for the National Football League which is the most popular organization for american football which further proves my point of the cultural aspect.

As for the people who use soccer to belittle the sport, i do completely understand how you could be a little put off by the term, but truthfully that's how kids are taught, it starts in the schools honestly. But yeah those guys are losers.

I think you should start to use the term football for what you call soccer, and American football you should rename it. The whole world is playing football and you are still in your bubble. Next WC will be in America (Canada-Mexico-USA) and a part for Mexico you have no team.
Considering Football generates more revenue then Soccer, I think we'll stay in that "bubble".
Again, Lets not pretend that American Football wouldn't overtake Soccer in popularity in about 2 decades if it decided to go national. We choose to stay in that "bubble", But American sports are the highest grossing sports consistently in the world.

I do not understand your post. According to your link.

"
1 – American Football : $17 Billion Revenue a Year :
2 – Soccer : $50 billion a year :
"

First place is 17 billions and second place is 50 billions? I'm not going to look for another link, because this link from you is wrong.
