If I'm gonna watch something, it's gonna have a writer.
I try watching it and it's just too much new info. I'm too out of touch and there are too many players.
As for the football vs soccer name debate, i feel the anger around the terms football and soccer is childish and egotistical. Americans already culturally have football so it's only logical that the other football must be generally differentiated somehow. The people who say "soccer" didn't make the name, they just were raised with that term around them. There's so much more things in the world to worry about than that. The football police will be busy for eternity, and don't get paid for it either. Tragic.
i do not go out of my way to see them, but enjoy them when they do show up
I'm not gonna argue with you at all, if that's what you wanna call it, i fully support that. It's not part of your culture so i can understand the lack of cogitation towards the sport. I'm too grown to worry about a man calling football throwball.
I understand the 'American Football' term but many still use the terms football and soccer due to upbringing and familiarity. The realization a more fair term doesn't beat familiarity. We all show this trait when it comes to something, but the last thing i will do is tell someone else what to think or shame them for that.
Not entirely true. It's generally known as football in America.
It is correctly named Gridiron Football
Its been like that for ages and even when I played games back in the 90´s most games about the sport was actually called that.. Gridiron
The reason why its called gridiron Football is because of the obvious vertical yard lines, that marks the rectangular field.
If you actually wanted to be just as correct, you could use the North American Football (because lets be honest here, it is not American football, its North American)
The organization is also called IFAF for a reason (International Federation of American Football) they don´t have claims to the Football name in its solo form. One thing I will give gridiron is that is it much closer to the roots of the sport genre (Rugby) and hence have more in common with that.
There is actually also a version called Canadian football.

When people use the word soccer, they often do so as a negative angle and that is why people dislike the termology (just like Throwball, that should not be used for North American Football)
I can assure that there's a low amount of people who refer to american football as gridiron football. It is indeed gridiron football, you are right, but what i meant by it not being entirely true was your claim that it's the american name. The term gridiron football is not universally known or spoken by americans besides rarely being brought up by football commentators, so it's not culturally american to call it gridiron football. It's merely a technical term. It is the correct term to describe the sport though. I don't watch canadian football and i'm not really a technical person as you can tell from my original post so yeah that's not a concern for me to call it north american football for the sake of being correct.
I've never heard of the IFAF, but i have heard of the NFL which stands for the National Football League which is the most popular organization for american football which further proves my point of the cultural aspect.
As for the people who use soccer to belittle the sport, i do completely understand how you could be a little put off by the term, but truthfully that's what kids are taught to call football/soccer, it starts in the schools honestly. But yeah those guys are losers.
I think you should start to use the term football for what you call soccer, and American football you should rename it. The whole world is playing football and you are still in your bubble. Next WC will be in America (Canada-Mexico-USA) and a part for Mexico you have no team.
I'm staying in my bubble. It's truly not the end of the world for me to call football soccer.
Never going to happen. For starters, American Football is by far the most popular sport in the US. It is less so in Canada, but besides American influence, Canada also has its own version (very similar, but still) of football, and in any case, the most popular sport is ice hockey instead. Soccer has a much smaller viewship in both countries, and is so far popularly largely considered a youth (and often, stereotypically, for girls) sport in both.
Nothing wrong with that (besides the sport's stereotype of being for girls), as NA sports cultural norm is very different from Europe. More violence in the field - and ironically, much better behaved spectators (hooliganism is a thing in Europe and Latin America).
Also, not the entire world outside NA calls soccer "football". Australia and New Zealand call it soccer (Australia has their own version of gridiron football), as does Japan and southernmost countries in Africa.
Italy does not even use either, they call it "Calcio", as do a number of other countries that have their own local name for it.
