Even ignoring the blimps/whatever from a few months back were obviously not aliens, for the sake of argument let's pretend that they were. I highly doubt they'd be interested in visiting us considering the first thing they were greeted to upon sending satellites, was hostile and immediate takedowns.
Come along and take over for us?
Maybe Martians could do
Better than we've done
We'll make great pets"
I think they will just annihilate humans and keep cats as pet instead.
If they disliked us the chances of us being exterminated would be the greater option.
Other races out in space would be the first options when it comes to pets (like in battle).
It's very unlikely that most people are going to understand aliens just from movies & such.
aliens land like "ALL YOUR BASE IS BELONG TO US!"
all the protest groups just grab their signs and start marching towards them like 'HUMAN RIGHTS MATTER!!"
hmm... yes.
We already are their pets. We've been their pets since our creation. Except we aren't fuzzy, cuddly pets for their companionship. We're more like the ants in a child's ant farm, where the ants remain unaware of their 'owner'.
Fantastic song from one of my fav artists.

Yeah, there kinda is. You need at least a Population I star for heavy metals, which means there need be two previous generations of stars, first. Heavy metals are necessary for technological progress.
But if they made it, doubt they'd be interested in what's happening on OT. It sure would be cool to see how they stored info in their cells - like our DNA. I wonder what elements it would use. And their source of energy. That's assuming they're biological.
for all you know they have inverse mouths that are just like flesh sticks covered with spikes... and they just club you to death with them and then absorb your juices...
