People who make pixel art should have a minimum to get the ammount of detail Metal Slug Pixel art have.

But yeah, I concur.
Ha. Hahaha. 8-Bit and 16 Bit still look better then the graphics we get now. We get too much realism nowadays. Can't they just dial it back like Valve does with the Source Engine? I'm a fan of classic games such as Metroid, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario, etc, but I really don't want them to return unless it's an Indie Game, Platformer, RPG, or just a flash game.
Resident Evil 2[image.gamespotcdn.net] has ♥♥♥♥ graphics by today's standards, assuming the standard of commercial quality today is ARMA 2[www.press-startnews.com], which was released four years ago, mind you.
I would think that something along the lines of Comix Zone, which was praised for its amazing graphics back in the day,[www.gamefabrique.com] would be considered obsolete under those standards. And it's not just because ARMA 2 is 3D.
If you can't tell what you're picking up, you aren't having fun. If you can't tell what you're attacking, you're not having fun. If you're going 'god, this looks like pickled donkey ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥' while you're playing, you're not having fun. Graphics are your first impression of a video game. They're almost everything, in terms of getting people to buy the game.
But this retro craze is still going overboard. 16-bit is nice and looks good. But 8-bit retro wannabes are most of the time not even 8-bit and still got less detail than lots of actual 8-bit games.
I'm saying Graphics are what sell the game, gameplay is what keeps you playing it. Giving it graphics that look like you communicated to an etch-a-sketch with an ouija board doesn't make me want to buy the game.
excellent paraphrasing there, soundpulse
And back in the day, the NES and SNES systems DID have good graphics. But compared to today, they don't. There was nothing 'better' to compare them to, so they were at the top of their heap.
Back then: Graphics and marketing sold it, and DON'T FORGET THAT IT HAD AN EXCELLENT SHAREWARE VERSION which was a whole third of the game.
Now: The graphics aged horribly, but yes, it's still fun.
