What's the deal with 8-bit/16-bit graphics making such a huge comeback as something 'special'?
Why are they so special? We have advanced past them! We advanced past them after 2000! Is a game suddenly 'better' because it's using obsolete graphics that we're above and beyond?

Because people have their nostalgia googles to tight.
People who make pixel art should have a minimum to get the ammount of detail Metal Slug Pixel art have.

Jesus, that's beautiful. That's something I'd expect out of a stand-up arcade game nowadays (since 3D stand up games still seem so rare...)

But yeah, I concur.
'Obsolete Graphics.'
Ha. Hahaha. 8-Bit and 16 Bit still look better then the graphics we get now. We get too much realism nowadays. Can't they just dial it back like Valve does with the Source Engine? I'm a fan of classic games such as Metroid, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario, etc, but I really don't want them to return unless it's an Indie Game, Platformer, RPG, or just a flash game.

Resident Evil 2[image.gamespotcdn.net] has ♥♥♥♥ graphics by today's standards, assuming the standard of commercial quality today is ARMA 2[www.press-startnews.com], which was released four years ago, mind you.

I would think that something along the lines of Comix Zone, which was praised for its amazing graphics back in the day,[www.gamefabrique.com] would be considered obsolete under those standards. And it's not just because ARMA 2 is 3D.

But... Graphics don't matter at all when it comes to games. It's gameplay.

If you can't tell what you're picking up, you aren't having fun. If you can't tell what you're attacking, you're not having fun. If you're going 'god, this looks like pickled donkey ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥' while you're playing, you're not having fun. Graphics are your first impression of a video game. They're almost everything, in terms of getting people to buy the game.

Ofc game play is most important.
But this retro craze is still going overboard. 16-bit is nice and looks good. But 8-bit retro wannabes are most of the time not even 8-bit and still got less detail than lots of actual 8-bit games.
But if it looks all pretty but you can't play without dying constantly through no fault of your own, what's the point in even playing it?

I'm saying Graphics are what sell the game, gameplay is what keeps you playing it. Giving it graphics that look like you communicated to an etch-a-sketch with an ouija board doesn't make me want to buy the game.

Graphics They're almost everything,
Graphics are almost everything. Go back to playing CoD. That's a game that is basically just what you say.
Graphics are /not/ almost everything, sir. You don't just go "These graphics suck! 0/10 would not play." Back in the day, the NES and SNES systems didn't have very good graphical games, but they were still really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fun. Mario? ADDICTING AS ♥♥♥♥. Who gives 2 ♥♥♥♥♥ if it's 8 bit? Yes, graphics are appealing, but it doesn't matter in the fun factor.

Fair enough but a lot of the older games have graphics that would be considered terrible by todays standards and a lot of 16 bit games actually look a lot better and take/took a lot more effort than textures on 3D models.

excellent paraphrasing there, soundpulse

And back in the day, the NES and SNES systems DID have good graphics. But compared to today, they don't. There was nothing 'better' to compare them to, so they were at the top of their heap.

How about you look at a game for what it was back then. Look at Doom. It still holds up to every shooter ever made except graphics. Stop comparing games from the 80s for crying out loud, and look at it for a classic game. /thread
Doom.

Back then: Graphics and marketing sold it, and DON'T FORGET THAT IT HAD AN EXCELLENT SHAREWARE VERSION which was a whole third of the game.

Now: The graphics aged horribly, but yes, it's still fun.
