What's the point of MOBAs?
The only thing people care about in MOBAs is winning. After grinding out 40 minute matches just to look at a loss sceen, they get extremely agitated and crash out more than any other type of player. Compared to a game like TF2, where winning comes secondary to the fun and engaging gameplay.

It genuinely confuses me as to why people still play MOBAs if it just makes them miserable.

To quickly end conflicts through non-nuclear means.

Wait, sorry, that's MOABs.
Some people seem to enjoy them. I talked to a few of them and from what I understand, they are itching for a game with high complexity and an ever-shifting meta. MOBAs are scratching that itch. Most of them are also committed to the point where it looks less like a hobby and more like a second job but... different folks, different strokes.
It's a peaks and valleys type deal. The highs aren't as high if the lows aren't so devastatingly low. Nothing quite compares to MOBAs in terms of complexity, strategy, and the sense of comradarie that comes when five strangers work together and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

In terms of strategy, they are notably inferior to most RTS games though. You're managing one unit in a MOBA, a whole lot more in an RTS. Not to mention managing resource gathering and infrastructure as well as production.

Exactly that. And as you keep getting better, the valleys get higher and higher.
I love League of Legends. But 50% of the people playing are losing. So that gets toxic and it also becomes unfun for people bad at the game. And it has a huge learning curve so most of you are bad.

But the game is genuinely fun. Not to mention FREE. You can get everything that isn't just a re♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
To make you hate yourself. I mean, I do occasionally jump into League of Legends but I only play Ashe, I don't like cycling champions.

I can hit people across the map with her ult so when i play, my team just calls "ashe ult" and they'll be at enemy base and I'll have just spawned, I'll take a quick look at where everyone is and line up using the minimap and help win the game just doing that lol

Yes and no. Some RTS games are more about strategy, generally speaking (also 4X games and a few other genres), but depending on the MOBA, it's more than just managing your one unit. It's the collective strategy of five players. The meta of most RTS games stays pretty rigid, where MOBAs can have many combinations of different heroes/champions that call for wildly different approaches.
as someone who played league for years, the point is to make you hate yourself! it is all being just social experiment! everyone is thrown into a madhouse and forced to bicker and fight among one another for the lulz of the creators!

hey wait, this is sounding familiar to a certain forum we post in...
Majority of people who play mobas are obsessed with winning and cannot accept a loss when they see one coming. They become dejected and furious when they continuously lose match after match and they "vent" or rather lash out at their team by starting flame wars, or out right leaving the match. I don't mind losing, so while I do occasionally get frustrated I'm usually having fun. I only play SMITE for reference, but I also don't play ranked matches either. Ranked in any moba is a cesspool of depressed people constantly bickering and people attempting to surrender at 10 minutes because they're just so full of rage that they cannot function any longer. These people need to learn to chill out.

I have you know that I’m Grandmasters in League of Legends and it only costed me my sanity.
Competitive and team games do not mix well, all competitive games should be 1v1, also tf2 is a bit of a bad example because that game is full of toxic pubstompers.

Different people play different games for different reasons. MOBAs are competitive games. Is it really a surprise that people who play competitive games tend to be competitive?

no, you are right. but there are so many sore winners and losers, in such environments. they exist in all competitive environments, but MOBAs breed a certain venomous level of them for some reason.

probably because many mobas have high skill floors, and massive skill ceilings. leading to a bit of inflation in the old ego.
I tried Predecessor and that's supposed to be like 3rd person MOBA hybrid or something like that? Regardless, I found it unstimulating. I understood the strategy behind it, but it was just too grindy and the gameplay itself was boring. That said, I think that's the only MOBA I've ever tried or close to it.
