I play both and enjoy both, and in general, you should look into RTS games.

you will loose. (used to be top 30 globally in ra2 and top 100 globally in ts)
the standard first move you learn to make is build 2 dogs.. one to send to your enemies base.. one to stand guard at your own.
the one to send.. since you park it before you enemies barracks.. since anything being build will be moving.. and still standing dogs beat moving ones.. that denies the opponent the ability to build any infantry meaning they loose.
if they counter it with the same.. you will have a dog guarding your own barracks biting their incoming dog dead while theirs bites your dead..
another trick.. -> while you waste early building time doing it building a 2d ore factory and selling it.. cost you 1000, but you get to keep the harvester worth 1400.. and get two gi's each worth 200.. so thats 800 profit.
(and a more cost effective way than waste time you could have been building tanks on building that second harvestor)
which is tip 3.. never tech up.. if you waste 2000 credits on a tech lab.. + 400 credits on 2 powerplants to power it.. I will have 4 extra Grizzly tanks on the field...
and your 3 grizzly vs my 7 means I blow up your base...
the higher price of prism tanks aint worth it (sure prism tanks in bulk are powerfull but games never last so long you get to have those numbers if the opponent knows what he's doing)
even IF you manage to build a spie AND get it in my tech building... (never happens vs human oponents who will spot some unit that looks like theirs but is not behaving like it and humans wall around their buildings ) it be a long time before you earn that firepower back from all that investment.
finally EVERYBODY plays usa.
for one simple reason : free paratroopers.. thats essentially 1200 credits of free units.. even in a usually game that lasts 10-15 minutes you get 2 or 3 drops off.. and thats like a third of the credits you earn and start with until that point.
yuri's revenge rebalanced things a bit.. yuri is just made overpowered.. and russian apocalipse tanks were made cheaper to adress some of these things.
Probably. There's only one viable strategy in RA2 multiplayer: spam Rhino Tanks. Nothing else works as well as that.
grizzly tanks as usa.
nothing beats the free troops + grizzly are 100 cheaper than their soviet counterpart.
in my days as global top 30.. that was all it was at... games never lasted over 15 min..
if the opponent not did build dogs.. they were dead in under 2 min...
if the opponent did but did not pick usa.. they were dead in 7-8 min.. due nothing can beat the 7 grizzly + 17 gi's incoming... even if they have 7 grizzly of their own.. or 6 rhino at that point...
if the opponent did.. well than they likely match what you do tit for tat and than it's a game of who manages things better... rarely it got to that point..
The Rhino tank outperforms the Grizzly in firepower and durability and the speed is not too different. The free troops die to a single deployed Desolator. As for the dogs... well, obviously. Scouting is important in RTS games.
i was GLOBAL top 30 eh.. as in back in 2001 I was one of the 30 best players in the world.
(granted not all the world may have had intenet acces to acces the multiplayer servers in 2001 yet.. that certainly helped asians are mad in competions;))
logically you always play with LOW funds (starting credits 5000 was default pick on high lvl)
but no grizzly is what it is at, usa is what it is at.
you won't even have that desolator
and the dogs.. you won't want to know how many people fail to build a barracks before a ore refinery... or who don't build two dogs imediatly and loose the game in 2 minutes because of that.
also we are talking the original RA balance here.. not the YR balance.. those rhini's are slow to build.
at that first attack mark of 7 minutes.. I have build
-powerplant (600)
-a barracks (500)
=== -2 dogs (400) -1 send to enemy barracks, one I keep home
-an ore refinery (2000)
-a second ore refinery (2000)
**you imediatly sell it for 1000 (keep the 2 gi and the ore truck)
-a war factory (2000)
**start buiding grizzly tanks.. build 7 of them.. (which is about when you run out of the cash you by now saved up..
-airforce command (1000) (to get those unit drops going)
so I arrive around minute 7 with 7 tanks and 18 gi's (and ofcourse I make groupings.. the won't all come from 1 side to be easy picked off by your desolator..
presuming you play iraq... well now
-Tesla Reactor (600)
-a barracks (500)
=== -2 dogs (400) -if you don't do this I block your barracks from making ANY units.. and that
means you will loose in 2 minuts.
-an ore refinery (2000)
-a second ore refinery (2000)
**NOT having teleporting ore trucks will cost you here.. you will be more credit defunct.(income will be less with just the 2 trucks)
**you imediatly sell it for 1000 (keep the 2 conscript and the ore truck)
**war factory (2000)
and no Radar Tower.
you will have that war factory later.. due less income and grizzly's build slower
most likely you JUST completed your 4th grizzly when my 7 thino march into your base alongside 14 gi's while another 6 paradrop in.
they will totally kill your smaller force
and thats WITH you having saved 1000 from not building that radar tower.
if you use 1000 funds to build a radar tower and 500 for that desolator.. than thats 1500 credits.. you will only have 2 grizzly's vs my 7... and be even more dead...
also I aint stupid.. that deployed desolator I will spot and not fall for.. my tanks just kill it after they dealt with the 2 grizzly's.. plus you aint likely to have your base as close together to protect it all (at the very least the gi's will kill your ore trucks.. while the tanks take out your grizzly's gi's deploy.. and sure your ore trucks have a gun.. that aint helping vs 20 gi's.
like I said I was global top 30.. this build order pretty much is perfection in the origianal balance pre yr.
they made grizzly's build a bit faster which makes them at least able to withstand this in so you be having 5.5 grizzly's in YR instead of 4.. (5 with the 6th coming out halfway the battle) to combat my 7 + 20 GI.. which makes your odds a BIT better..
2001 was 24 years ago. The meta changed. Look at high level matches now. EVERYONE picks Iraq for the Desolators and the Rhinos. Also, those teleporting miners carry HALF the amount of War Miners (500 creds) and they take the SAME time to mine that load. Last time I checked out a FT10, whoever picked USA lost. Rhino tanks won most games. Edit: that's why I don't bother playing competitively, because RA2 is nothing but Rhino or Grizzly spam. For what it's worth Kane's Wrath is the actually most interesting C&C for competitive, but too many APM needed for my taste and interest.
They are all excellent
