What is the purpose of moderation in games and forums?

There is a mute function everywhere nowadays. Like, let people say what they want, its just words online. I don't see the purpose of moderation and putting ressources into this.

As long as they're neutral and don't take bias over the rules... it makes the playing field even.

Bars and real life have bouncers and cops to prevent actual crime, not people from saying a bad word or sharing an opinion the broad masses disagree with.

We talked about criminal offences didn't we ? How many crimes actually happen in a forum or chat in a video game ? People throw around racial slur and insults, mute them and move on. No moderation needed unless you have an ego problem and constantly need others punished for saying a bad word to you.

It's not in the interest of moderators or the platform in question to host illegal content. For example, it would not go over well with authorities if people were simply allowed to post links or images of sexual content featuring minors. Something that isn't exactly unheard of happening on unmoderated forums or anywhere else images can be posted/hosted...

Toxicity does not exist in a forum where people are used to trolls, mute them and just got bored of their attempts.

Toxicity exists a lot more in a forum where moderators can be instrumentalized to block peoples accounts who disagree or get triggered by their passive aggressive troll attempts.

The state of this forum after the volunteer moderators were replaced by paid ones as well as after the rules became more lax actually prove that committed moderation made this place better. With someone cleaning up all the pointless political drivel as well as religious-themed discussions made it easier to actually discuss pastime activities. Not sure if you've been around before the rule change so we might not be on the same page on that. Either way, it's good to have folks around who can give the rude ones some time to cool off rather than pollute discussions with toxicity.

Mods don't read into discussions. So it is all down to who has numbers. If one is righteous and fair and gets reported by 12 people, then he gets banned, even if he did nothing wrong.

Hence I constantly get my bans revoked by support, due to mods applying wrong and excessive bans. Funny that this always happens when I engage with the same group of people who mass-report me.

Everything good we had was bought-out. It's now run by shills. People had their space, but normies ruined it.

Even if I had my own forum, it would be slandered by the very people I criticize. They're the ones who can't keep their grimy hands to themselves.
