If you're looking for Shmups, check out Ether Vapor Remaster, Alltynex 2nd, RefleX, and KAMUI.

Also, CTHCC is not an RPG, despite being written in RPG Maker -- it is more like a sim game.

Yeah, GGN seems to get mixed reviews. Not sure how much of that has to do with its fanservicey content, but still. I haven't played it myself, so I can't say how good/bad it is.

I don't know the actually-Japanese VNs that well, but for VNs in general, I strongly recommend Dysfunctional Systems, which has a very well-written and serious storyline. Episode 1 currently exists, and two additional longer episodes are being developed right now.

Also, if you're looking for a multiplayer community, 100% Orange Juice has a very active playerbase.
