Bad potatoes
Has anyone else had difficulty finding good potatoes at the supermarket lately? I've been getting/finding bags of them "on sale" very very cheaply, $1.50/5lbs, but they've been practically unusable. Small, green, and blighted from the inside out. The racks I would normally pick my russet spuds from at 60c/lb are empty. I shop at Kroger and Tom Thumb.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

farmer's markets are great for produce. find your local farmers market, and you'll never look back.

Imagine that! :)

Yes, there's definitely been a bit of greedflation mixed with some very real shortages and increased demand.

Yes, there's a heckin' "potatonewstoday" website, just about... potato news...

What "I" think is going on atm is more in line with "budget conscious consumerism." Greedflation, which is a PITA and heckin' annoying and people should be going to prison over it, but won't be, 'cause money... /sigh

Anyway, as people react to increased food prices, what do they do? That's right, they look for the less expensive foods with the best overall value. What is that? Again, you're correct! It's Po-ta-toes. Why is it hard to find good ones? They're already gone by the time you're looking for them...

Potatoes are a great, nutritious, food and can be served in a wide variety of ways. They make everything else in typical Western diet go further and leave the consumer feeling fuller. They're awesome for saving money, yet providing a good meal. That's why you're seeing fewer of the good ones.

At Kroger, I've been buying these individually wrapped "microwaveable" potatoes. Why? They're larger and more of the dirt is already washed off. I eat the whole potato and don't like eating dirt, so... I oven bake them, once unwrapped, washed/scrubbed well, and covered in a bit of olive-oil and dill weed.

Sum: Potatoes are a popular, economical, choice right now and that, combined with some other factors, are why good ones are more scarce.
