But Half Life 1 was on Steam before HL2 release.... HL2 just ended up making it no longer optional to have Steam if you want to play Valve games....

Actually my statement isn't even true, CS 1.6 was the first game to require Steam. Half life was just one of the first games on Steam along with some other titles.

Most likely the ban came well after. You can often tell when someone was banned by looking at their post history, just fyi, IF it's a perma ban.
