I don't know...Nirvana affected culture in a way that had not been seen since The Beatles. Nirvana effectively killed glam rock....overnight. They were massively influential and a turning point for the direction of music. That alone makes them one of the all time greats.

I agree with you but I still have mixed feelings about it. I mean if you are saying "what are the all time greatest bands that changed our culture?", I agree that the Beatles and Nirvana were the turning points. But the individuals themselves, would you alone put Kurt Cobain up there with the likes of Elvis etc? I think Nirvana as a whole group effort changed things, not JUST Kurt. Here we are talking about the individuals, not the bands/groups they were in. You can also argue "Without Kurt Cobain there is no Nirvana", but it was a team effort. Where does Kurt Cobain himself rank in the charts? I'm not sure. He is up there for sure. The deaths of the artists and how they died may have a lot to do with where they are ranked (Sometimes).

Nah, Kurt wouldn't put himself up there with the all time greats but that is just because that was how he was. He was nowhere close to being arrogant enough to do something like that. You have to remember that all of the songwriting in Nirvana was done by Cobain. Everyone else was forming their lines around the skeletons he wrote. Nirvana's music was a group effort but the whole thing was his brain child.

Grohl is in the master mind of The Foo Fighters...completely different band. While they are great I don't think they reach the same highs as Nirvana did.

Nirvana isn't big because Cobain died. They were massive while he was alive and during the period of the groups activity. Nirvana was just that big of a deal. So yea, I can easily say Cobain is one of the greats.

I'd say MJ was more influential than Nirvana. Glam Rock was on its deathbed by the mid nineties, Nirvana was just the final nail in the coffin. Grunge is also dead today, but even now people are trying to be MJ.

I think you can talk about them as a group. I don't think Lennon would have had nearly the same level of success if he wasn't with the Beatles and a lot of the Beatle's success is attributed to Lennon as though everyone else just sat around and waited for him to write songs.

I would put Tupac and kurt on the same level as heavy influential figures of the 90's itself, but to compare them to Lennon, Elvis, and whatnot is a bit of a stretch. it just doesn't sound right.

Tupac was great, he had the same issue as Marley, that his genre wasn't respected as 'real music' by a lot of people. The fact that he has such renown in spite of this shows how awesome he was. Also the fact that someone murdered him meant he was doing something right. If any of the dead artists were set to have real effects on the world, not just on their genre of music, but on political and social issues, it was Tupac.

I'd actually argue that hendrix was better than Elvis, he was a far more talented guitarist and a more creative songwriter.

Winehouse was also really good but her live performances towards the end were terrible. Like Hendrix, if she'd cleaned herself up, lived and had a long career, and been more consistent she might have been up there with the greats.

Glam was on its death bed by the mid 90's because Nirvana killed it lol. Nirvana was already done by the mid 90's. Hendrix was better than Elvis though, Elvis couldn't begin to hope to be nearly the guitar player Hendrix was.

Lennon was by far the best piece of the Beatles in my opinion though. Mccartney was too focused on the Pop approach and he didn't have the creativity Lennon had.

I guess what I'm saying is Nirvana were a real force but what they built didn't last. Maybe if Cobain had lived, I guess. But then again maybe not.

I don't rate the Foo Fighters at all. They really are just a middle of the road rock band and there are dozens of bands more successful and relevant. Grohl is a talented musician but he doesn't have the creativity or vision to be great. Cobain really was everything.

There are singers and then their are entertainers. All three of them are entertainers.

Well said, and i get it now.I really wonder what would be the next breakthrough band/ movement that will shake things up. Where is the direction now? Foo Fighters is 1 of the few i still listen to, but we need something new and fresh. Hasn't everything been done before? What's next for Rock/Alternative? That thought depresses me. Sorry to go off topic sorta but that's my lingering question. What or who, will be the NEXT big thing?

That is still yet to be seen. Nobody expected Nirvana to be the next great band...they just...happened. And they hit like a damn sledge hammer.

One day a new band will do the same thing. The direction right now is stripped down clean sounding 'elevator rock'. And I cannot wait until another heavy band tears that ♥♥♥♥ down too. It alternates with the times.... sooner or later a high energy band will hit again.

^^^ AMEN. These are the dark ages. Nothing ever last anyway. Once something new comes along they will suck everything out of it until they can't anymore and move onto the next. the wheel keeps on turning.....

Cannot stand John Lennon. A hypocrite of the highest order. Best voice of all time is none of those three. It's probably some opera singer. If you want to talk "modern music", then Captain Beefheart hands down. 7.5 octave range, could switch into completely different voices in the middle of a song, rasp like you wouldn't believe, this feeling of being all over the place, yet under control. Just incredible. Snakefinger had great range, too. A good subtle, and underrated voice is that of Leo Kottke. Very nice, but even he doesn't have confidence in it. Rory Gallagher had a terrific blues voice. Ray Collins has an insane falsetto. Country ♥♥♥♥ Montana's is like Johnny Cash only deeper and quite nice, as well. The members of Gentle Giant had some great harmonies, so did the Andrews Sisters. Come to that, there's no one quite like Ella Fitzgerald. Robert Johnson was a sheer blues powerhouse. Astrud Gilberto had a sweet and soft, yet sultry voice. And I've just rambled on about singers. I'll stop now.

I think the point was more who was the most influential singer rather than who has the greatest sounding voice. I mean, how do you even gauge who's voice is better than the other? I know range and all that but I mean, that is very subjective.

By the way, Lennon's personal qualities have nothing to do with his talents as a singer.

Anyway, those other singers you listed are definitely talented as well. I think you just took it to a new level of detail that the OP might not have been looking for lol.

Best voice is a matter of opinion and taste. Personally, I think john Lennon has the best voice of the 3.

Best vibe would go to Bob Marley (depends If you like reggae.) Redemption song is amazing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRsmcZYviDg

Best influence on American Culture - Elvis Presley

Best overall performer - Michael Jackson (2nd is Elvis)

All had significant impacts and were the best at their craft.

BUT, without an influence such as Elvis, who knows what would of happened.

Look how amazing he sings and plays a guitar at the same time, without the need of any auto tune or any sort of enhancement. He was like just sitting on a couch dude rocking that tune ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. He wasn't even trying how did we lose these great legends they are all gone.

What an incredible man Bob Marley was. Never have there been another reggae star like Bob

I know right? it's sad now. Everything nowadays is polished up to perfection which makes it lose value. People need to be more real. When you look at that video and see him Bob playing you say "hey, he is a person just like me, he is a down to earth human being." Now it all has to be commercialized b.s. with overproduced nonsense. We lose great talents too soon.
I don't know who any of those people are

No offense but that scares me. The thought that most people as years go by won't remember some of the most important influences in music. Not that you have to like them, but just not even knowing who they are D: Oh well, I'd recommend you at least try to know them better if you are into music. Just a suggestion. Unless this is troll bait then, niiiice.

I recognize the names of Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley and I remember what their faces look like but that's about it. I can't help but exaggerate all the time
