Anime suggestion?
Well I'll basically have A LOT of free time this summer when school's out. I don't plan on subscribing to anime streaming services like Crunchyroll, I'm trying to look for sites that let me watch them for free.
Any good anime suggestion? Any type is fine, I've been trying to continue watching Steins Gate (I think it's called), should probably finish it at some point.

The difference between how America and Japan portrays kids as characters is that American shows are usually targeted towards young, elementary school kids unlike Japanese shows, which are targeted towards 10-15 year olds on average, or Otakus for the niche shows. Most kids watching Spengebab are probably too young to even have romantic feelings--in fact, the only times I can remember "fanservice" in western animation was in stuff that was obviously Anime-inspired like Avatar and Teen Titans.

The reason Recess and Hey Arnold starred kids was that they were made for kids to relate to. It's different with Japan. Yes, there are a lot of shows that star kids for the Japanese children to relate to (Sailor Moon, One Piece etc.) but then there's the creepy fanservice shows that only seem to be made for middle-aged otaku to spend $100 on action figures, wall scrolls, and companion pillows.

Granted my list was harsh for both sides. In fact, #7 was only put there because I remembered Cowboy Bebop had an androgynous little girl as one of the main characters ("cowboy bebop at his computer", lol). Most of the ones that I could think of were really old ones like Lupin the III (I think; really need to watch it someday), Golgo 13, Ashita no Joe (again, not sure), and some of the ones you listed. Fist of the North Star had a little girl that Kenshiro saved IIRC, but I was only counting major and supporting characters.

Actually, western animation is starting to have problems with this, too. You used to have shows like The Real Ghostbusters, The Flintstones, and Spider-Man that starred adult characters, but now it seems like the only adult main characters in cartoons are talking animals or in superhero shows like you said.

TL;DR: kids shows are for kids, Japanese kids shows are for middle-aged otaku

EDIT: about the Little Nemo thing, I remembered some stuff
1. I think it was cut out of the American version (never seen the full movie, it's rare and expensive)
2. The Mickey Rooney character wasn't a good guy but a trickster
3. Aladdin featured a similar scene with Jafar and Jasmine (who was celebrating her 15th birthday according to the person in the Tumblr screenshot), so Disney is just as guilty I guess?

I can see your point, there are a lot of harem anime or anime that have more sexualization than they should, more disturbingly enough, a lot of those feature kids and teenagers.
Hell they even make shows when kids are main characters for no good reason, i mean, many action stories would benefit from having an more mature character but nope, making kids the heroes is the better option despite it almost never working, just watch Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers(they have the most popular Marvel team with many popular characters including freakin Spider-Man and most of the attention is given to some brats) or Haiyore! Nyaruko-san(an anime which transforms the eldritch abominations from Lovecraft into cute teenage girls that are in love with an regular, boring but nice teenage boy...i really wish i was kidding on this one, i really do)
Although i can also say that there are also many anime starring teenager or kids that offer little to no sexualization that i did not mention because of the whole no kids as main characters, i mean, anime like Tonari No Seki-Kun(basically about an girl that is constantly being annoyed by Seki in High School, really short, creative and funny) or Ore Monogatari(ugly teenage boy gets an attractive girlfriend really early in the show, no harem or more than one girl or boy in love with the main characters and the show being just about their relationship) are so kid friendly you could show them in the western world without having to censor them anyway.
As for western cartoons, like you said, the westen world still has an very strict image of cartoons as mostly stuff for kids with the only exceptions being shows like South Park or Family Guy, and since kids can relate more easily to kids, most cartoons are having shows with kids or teenagers as main characters, honestly, as long as there are more quality cartoons like Gravity Falls or Steven Universe and less terrible cartoons like Ultimate Spider-Man and Avenger Assemble, i really do not care if the main characters are kids, teenagers or adults.
If you liked Howl's Moving Castle, you are gonna love Castle in The Sky.
Watching an anime is like playing Bayonetta as a kid; Ignore all of the sexy, and enjoy how awesome it is.
Watch Boki - poku what ever that ♥♥♥♥ is *lenny*

Also, to the person who loves the American Cartoons, Japan has plots in their shows much more than American cartoons do. There is more progression, and that, I believe, makes me think that most animes are better. However, Adventure TIme and Gravity Falls must be applauded for putting more thinking into their series than others do.
I agree! I mean, I've seen some that have literally made me tear up a bit because of their story progression.

Honestly I cringe a bit whenever I go to bookstores and check out the manga section. As much as I hate to admit it, Japanese anime and mange ARE infamous for portraying their girl characters in a very sexual way. There's this one (titled Suzuki or Suzuka or something, I forgot) that I saw a long time ago, about this teenage boy moving into an apartment complex that also has a Japanese spa business. And what do you know, the people who live there are all girls and super hot. :catpaw: I've seen how these artists draw the girl characters in manga and nude scenes plenty of times, and since I'm not a guy I don't get excited over that stuff lol, I cringed a bit.
That being said, as much as that manga is mostly about girls being nude in bathhouses, it still has a story. And it does have a shorter or less meaningful story than something like Bleach or Howl's Moving Castle. However, there are a lot of anime and manga that do not focus on that aspect, which is why I love watching those types of anime.

Thanks! There is a lot of sexuality thrown into Japanese anime, I do admit, but it doesn't rule the series. I like animes because most don't have as many filler episodes. They move. It doesn't feel like your watching the same thing over and over. There have arcs, with minor and major, both.

In a pokemon manga, in the original Japanese book, Misty was in a hot spring and was holding her breasts, wishing they would "evolve". Then she sees Ash, Brock, and Eevee kid staring at her, and she yells at them. Also, Misty's and Jessie's breasts are much larger than in the cartoon.

Exactly :rflower::rflower: Have you seen Steins Gate? I haven't finished it (I'm half way through) and I think I need to at some point. It's very interesting, and actually there's this new American-made movie called Tomorrowland (check out the trailer on Youtube, I thought it was okay-ish) that utilized one part from Steins Gate. You'll see in the trailer's comment sections from people that have watched that anime talking about it.
Anyways, slow start, gets better toward the end of the half, and... one of the best I've seen so far. I'm not gonna ruin the plot for you. :)
