Why do people criticize you when your profile is set to private?
Steam is full of hackers, phishers, scammers and who knows what the hell else.
If I want a private profile, I will have one, dammit.

Because a lot of people who have private accounts are usually trolls. Not saying everyone, but a good number of people make dummy accounts in order to say stupid stuff. And so people usually ignore or don't take people who have private account seriously. For me personally, I won't friend someone who has a private account. I've gotten like 6 friend request in the past couple of months of people whose profile I couldn't view, and I clicked no on the request. Its not that I wanna see all your stuff, but for me, I don't trust people who have private accounts. Kinda the opposite of OP, cause I think all private users are hackers or trolls.

Only one thing: Trade for cards.

This is seriously getting out of hand.

That's okay, most people with private accounts aren't trying to "friend" you.

Protip: Private account or not you can read whatever comments they have wrote if you look at the OTHER possible selection on their name and see if they are a troll or not - or if it is a new account with no comments.

I think he is talking about the "view posts" option.

Well, that is me and, yes, I am talking about the view posts option. You can't hide the view posts option.

I think he is just talking about private accounts.

I was talking about private accounts. I'm not trying to insult anyone, but that's just how I am. I've been on Steam for almost 6 years, and I've had my fill of trolls. So when people try to friend me with private account, I just ignore them now. They're free to have their stuff private, just like I'm free to ignore them. Win win if you ask me.

I agree. Friends are people you actually know, have met, and do stuff with. Anyone on steam is, at best, less random pixels that doesn't much care if you come or go.

I barely trust private accounts when they add me here on Steam. Most of them are phishers or just trolls. But there are also nice people with private profiles. So I always accept them, check their profile. When it is an empty profile or if we have nothing in common (or whatever) I will unfriend that person again.
Misha Apr 30, 2015 @ 8:50am
well when someone friends you and they have private profile you will see their respective level in notifications even when their profile is private so there is no danger at all, when you see level 0 its a bot, when you see a person with level 40 and a private profile its nothing.
also I dont criticize profiles like that, I only shave off stupid people that troll on forums and have these profiles like biggest bosses.
anyway enjoy private profillin´
Randy GaySexy Apr 30, 2015 @ 9:04am
cause scammer do it.

What are you trying to hide, huh?
I personally don't see the point of having a private profile personally, as the information on my profile (like my playtime and stats) isn't personal information that i'd be afraid of strangers seeing. I can choose how public or how private I want my profile to be, by what I put on it. But I guess for some people, they'd prefer to share absolutely no information at all. I personally don't understand it, but to each their own.

Maybe we just got tired of removing garbage posts from our profiles.

Maybe we think it pointless for you to look at a profile to make decisions about us since we are not asking you to recommend a game for us.

Maybe we are thinking you should either read the post we wrote or look at our play and decide if we are worth replying to or playing with instead of seeing if we have mastered emoticons, leet speak, or meet some silly criteria to make it possible to *gasp* qualify as worthwhile in some meaningless status hunt.

Maybe it keeps us from having to deal with bots.

Maybe it is all of the above.

Because sometimes those phishers and scammers have their profiles private too, and people start associating normal members with them.

Or, they assume it's private because you have something to hide.
