Does anyone else find the graphics of Half-Life 2 better than all modern games
For some reason I believe Half-Life 2 looks better than most modern games. I believe it is because of the unnecessary and ridiculous special effects that keep getting applied to modern games, it just seems that Half-Life 2 new what was necessary and what looked stupid. I posted this here instead of the Half-Life 2 forums because this is more of a problem with the world of games and not Half-Life 2

Well i agree somewhat, Theres some old games that have decent graphics compared to now. i guess it depends on how much work was put into the graphics, detail.

Perhaps the graphics aren't what makes a game look good. It's the world design
So a game's grahpic design maybe? Some old games look decent, Maybe it's more of a sentimental thing, You see half life 2 and think the graphics are good, ok now lets take another fps from the same year and maybe the opinion will be different possibly? regardless of wheather sentimeatal feelings impact one's opinion on a game's graphics, i think they're are some old games that still have decent graphics for being a few years old. graphics seem to age more well then others maybe bc on how the graphics themselves are balanced in detail and design?

Characters are fine, facial animations are great. However, environments are empty and have not much detail compared to today's standards.

But modern games have more details on graphics, such as glasses swinging and dynamic lightening.

Let's take Half-Life 2 and compare it to Assassin's Creed IV, The Forest and Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

AC: IV, the entire screen looks really pixelated at 1080p, even with high quality anti-aliasing and the foliage looks the most pixelated of all

The Forest: It's hard to explain but it just doesn't look good, not as good as Half-Life 2 did

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition: Looks stupidly blurry and pixelated, depth of field is forced on you so frame rate is low and everything looks stupid

No I don't. Games such as Metro: last light using the latest tech far out strip older games such as hl2. On a modern rig games are just better all round than games of old.

Poor examples.

How about Battlefield 4, Crysis 1/2/3, All the metro's, dishonored, bioshock 1/2/infinite, Far Cry 3/4, etc. Choose some actually good looking games. Sleeping dogs looks great, nothing in Half Life can compare to Sleeping Dogs rainy night city scenes.

I don't play any games by EA becasue I am never installing Origin, The other examples all look around the same level, Sleeping Dogs is definitely better than the Definitive Edition.

You are probably seeing the past through rose-tinted glasses.

I played Half-Life 2 about a month ago, and honestly I still believe it looks better than Far Cry 2 or 3 or 4. The image of Half-Life 2 doesn't have the excessive and unnecessary detail of Far Cry 2, your screen isn't cluttered with enough detail to choke an elephant. It's hard to explain why Half-Life 2 looks better but it does

The lighting effect in Half-life 2 is still one of the best and most realistic, especially when you are outside. When it comes to the other graphical aspects I disagree though.

It just seems most modern games have gone overboard with unnecessary special effects in order to look more realistic but immersion seems more important

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking too. Most Valve games don't go overload with special effecs which may be partially why they sometimes seem to look better than a lot of games. It's not that the game necessarily DOES look better, its just that it isn't trying too hard and is easier to look at.
