i guess it was only emo music, not "metal".
And the easiest way: Look images, they tend to look emo.
My brother was listening some emo some weeks ago and I said "wait, that's emo, isn't it?" and my father said "why, it doesn't seem emo? they're screaming?". Hah, later I searched on LastFM and they were.
It's easy to know, and it doesn't sound like metal. Even they don't usually sound like metalcore.
I listen to every genre of metal in some way, whether it be melodic death metal to power metal. Although screamo is actually closer to rock. Either way I don't really think it's possible for an entire genre to be horrible, unless it's something not to be taken seriously like chipmunk.
