A movie like Memento

So I remember seeing this movie on tv that seemed to rip off the idea of an amnesiac protagonist who records important things (in momento the tattoos and written notes, and in this one he recorded notes on a tape recorder). I really do not remember much about this movie but I would like to ID it and perhaps watch it again. It's jsut been bothering me that I can't remember the film's name or most of its details. Hell for all I kmow it may have came out before memento.

The only film I can think of where a character uses a video tape to record memories is 50 First Dates, but I doubt it's the one.

Do you recognise any actors from other films/TV shows, was it in English, what genre was it, and any other details?

It was in english and was a mystery/ thriller. If memory serves the protagonist was trying to solve a crime. I don't rmember the actors being too recognizable but I could be wrong they may actually be pretty famous. One of the other details I remember was outside of the protagonists apartment there was a painter working on a mural of some sort (I think).

no, actually I think I just found it on one of Fork's links. I think it was Clean Slate (1994) staring Dana Carvey. It is the most similar to what I was thinking. Apparantly its a comedy which I didn't realize at the time I watched it, although I dont really remember it. It has the amnesiac protagonist who is trying to solve a crime and uses a tape recorder. It also felt like a 90's film and seemed older than Memento when I watched it, which makes sense as its from '94.

I guess it isnt too similar to memento though as its a comedy and memento was pretty dark.
