Steam profile picture makers
So, every time I upload a new profile pic it ends up being really low quality and blurry. Is there anyone that knows how to make steam profile pictures that will be clear and nice like the original picture? If anyone does know how to do that, could you turn this pic -> http://i.imgur.com/qXP8vkR.jpg into a high quality steam profile pic. If anyone does that post in the comments. Ty ^^

No, steam always compresses the avatars. Nothing you can do about it.

aw darn. how come some people have a really high quality avatar tho?

It's probably the simplicity/certain colors that make you unable to see compression, but it's still there

Yeah, my avatars always looks blurry with ugly colour splotches after I uploaded to Steam. Sharpening the image helps a bit, as does contrast and removing other bits of graphical artifacts.

Sorry OP, but that image isn't really suitible for an avatar to be honest, an lot of it is just background, and I can't make out what the hell it's supposed to be until I see the bigger version. You could try cropping it at least. That said, yeah, I know my one isn't that great either.

In case anyone is wondering, I found the cause of the problem:

The image being displayed on our profiles is actually 164x164 pixels, 89% the original size (184x184), so it can't "scale" easily like 75% (3/4) or 80% (4/5) would. This is thanks to both the border and the space allowed for the images. So if you open the image in a separate window/browser, you'll see the version you uploaded, which is also displayed in the "Upload" section of your profile editor.

Why Steam couldn't just demand a 164x164 px image is beyond me. I tailor my icons to be perfect for every site I use, and then Steam goes and rapes it like facebook does. At least facebook is trying to save space by compressing images. Steam's just squishing everything to fit.

NOTE: Uploading a 164 px image doesn't help either, as Steam stretches it to 184px, and then squishes it again. Resulting in a profile picture that is so blurred that it looks censored :conwayfacepalm:
