The original Team Fortress was a Quake mod. It was adopted and retooled as Team Fortress Classic.
Not unlike how Counter Strike was originally a mod for Half Life and Doom Master Levels was a compilation of fan WADs.
I really wish Valve would formally adopt Black Mesa. I'd pay for it.

Definately, just don't expect it to be anything like its successor. The movement and shooting mechanics are much more complex but it's very fast paced. Unfortunately there's not a lot of people left, mostly hardcore veterans.
