I did state I knew this was a two year old thread but reading it, I was shocked to learn that the only reason people liked WASD so much was because they were either just used to it or because of the ctrl, alt and shift keys. My hands are rather small, with me being a small skinny person. They can reach the ctrl, alt and shift keys easily. ctrl is a bit of a stretch but I can still reach it with my pinky while pressing a movement key or using it as a modifier to activate an ability or something. I know a lot of females will have smaller hands than me though so maybe you all with smaller hands will have difficulty with ESDF and hitting that Ctrl button. Hitting shift and alt shouldn't be a problem unless you're missing your pinky or you can't use it due to an injury, malformation or disease.
WASD is preferred because people are just used to it. Developers use it as a default and ppl are generally too lazy to change the controls or are just so used to it, they like it now. Ease of access for a single button is a ridiculous notion.
I know right?
I'm so confused on how it's easier. What does your keyboard look like? I literally move my pinky down and press down and now I'm holding down shift. The keyboard is designed so that if your hands are in the "home" position with your pointer fingers on j and f, it would be very easy for your pinky to access the shift key on either side. I can understand the Ctrl key but you WASD people keep on including shift in your argument and shift is just as easy to press in ESDF as it is in WASD. Do you WASD users use a different keyboard or something?
And Merry Christmas to you too!
It doesn't matter if they use it or not - what matters to me is simply their reasons they say they prefer to use it. I would gladly accept, "because I'm a dirty pleb" or "because I've been indoctrinated" rather than "because the shift key is a little over 1/2 an inch closer" which is ridiculous. Not only are you increasing the amount of keys you can reach, you're adding 3 keys just to your pinky's accessibility.
Do I actually care about what you do with your fingers? Nope, don't give a f*ck but it's just the bs answers people give like...
or
(*pssst* No it doesn't)
and to Danksama: I used to use WASD too because I was just a dirty pleb and I can also confirm it was easy to press the shift key using WASD but with ESDF, instead of pressing on the extreme left of the shift key, I now press on the extreme right of the shift key because the shift key is 1.5 inches long and that's standard on all keyboards...
Thanks guys! You've been wonderful!
OH really? That's kinda fascinating. I use my thumb for Alt and pinky for shift and Ctrl. So, you use your pinky for shift, caps and Tab?
I guess using your pinky for pretty much anything feels uncomfortable to you. That's cool - I guess so long as you aren't required to press a lot of buttons to function in-game, you feel right as rain.
