What is the difference between a robot and a mech?
Whenever I look at a game like Lost Planet or MechWarrior I always think "cool, you have battle robots", while all other people say "Cool, you have mechs". And when I read this I always ask me why the people are saying mech when it is a robot. I really don't see any difference between them and I have the impression that people just call any machine with a humanoid form a mech.

One definition I read was that a robot can work on it's own while a mech needs a pilot to be operational. But that didn't persuade me, because the Titans in Titanfall are called mechs either, although they don't need a pilot to work and can perform actions on their own thanks to their AI.

A robot is autonomous and a mech is usually something that needs to be controlled.

To me robots are either more like a machine or a computer (and AIs as well), and mechs are robots (or giant robots) where you can enter upon them physically and control them in this way.
Or something along this lines.

Mechas = gundam, mazinger, eva
Robots = R2D2, EDI from Mass Effect, well, she's an AI????, wall·e
