Bought a GP-5 gas mask with a 4mm filter from an antique shop, is the filter safe?
I read that the original 40mm filters contain asbestos, so I'm unsure should I use the filter attached to my mask without developing lung cancer. The mask is in really good shape, same as the filter, only some scratches and stuff like that here and there on the top as well as dust and dirt on and inside the mask, but the insides of the filter are good, almost as if untouched.

I can post images of the filter in case someone can tell me is the filter safe to use or should I dispose it before someone inhaling something not suitable.

The mask and filter are apparently made in 1987.

I am planning to use the mask in airsoft with some other military-ish suit and maybe an airsoft AK-74 or AKM (haven't decided which one).

Edit: I shaked the filter and didn't hear nothing but some sort of a small thing move around the filter. It doesn't sound it has carbon in it, but it's possible it has asbestos.

Yeah I read that filters made in 70's and above are apparently safe, but I'm still not sure. Idk, I might just buy a PMK gas mask filter and use it, it's at least safe and looks almost identical aside from the serial numbers of the original.

Also do you recommend buying either an SMG or pistol eg. Makarov?

How big are you playing on airsoft and what can you afford.

Well, something between €/$100-500 and what do you mean by that?

I'd just get a pair of new filters. They're usually cheap enough.

Oh... I haven't played airsoft yet. But it's going to be quite large
Why not just play paintball instead? It comes with a cool looking mask and everything.

Because I like more "realistic warfare" style-ish outdoor games. Plus airsoft doesn't make you dirty (depending on the place you're playing on of course)

And also you can get the paintball mask in airsoft

I'm planning to get a cold-war/WW2 style outfit and weapon(s), so that's why I want an AK-74.

I would've taken something else, eg. AR-15 or M4A1 or that FN2000 otherwise, but thanks for the suggestion

I know this is a late reply but the 40mm filters for GP-5 gas masks manufactured in the 60's and before contained 7.5% asbestos in the cotton layer below the charcoal, though filters manufactured post 60's do not contain asbestos but may contain activated charcoal if it is expired. My advice is just buy a new one from poland since they still manufacture them, or remove the contents of the filter (just to be safe). If you decide to remove the contents of the filter i recommend u wear a dust-mask or something similar to prevent inhaling cotton fibers.
