Has N64 Goldeneye really aged poorly?
Lately, there's a growing trend of people trashing classic N64 games, usually by those born after Space Jam came out. People like to trash Goldeneye and say how horrible it is now. Do you think Goldeneye really has aged poorly?

For me, Goldeneye is just as good as it was in 1997, and this is coming from someone who missed out on it in their childhood and didn't play it until 2010. The only gripes I have are the N64 controller and the choppy framerate. Yes, of course there are aspects where it'll fall short like its graphics, A.I., and split-screen multiplayer. Still, for an FPS with so many innovations like sniper rifles, accuracy modelling, and mission objectives, it got a lot of things right.

Don't get me wrong, I am NOT one of those people who think Goldeneye is the greatest game of all time. I just don't get the people who can compare Goldeneye to Call of Duty and Halo and say how lousy it is. If you removed the graphics and cutscenes, those games would actually have less to offer than Goldeneye. Just compare Goldeneye to Eurocom's remake, the poster child for mediocre modern FPS games with no freedom.

I think the biggest shame is that Nintendo and Activision had to block Rare from releasing their 99% finished 360 port in order to release that thing. Oh well, at least we got Perfect Dark, a much-better game.

I can say it obviously does show its age, but I still enjoy it and multiplayer with friends is still a blast, but that could also be my nostalgia talking.
I played that game as a child and I wasn't really impressed and I'm less so now because, yes, it has aged poorly. Perfect Dark is far better FPS in every aspect.
Nostalgia always makes old games that you grew up with better. In my case I loved Medal Of Honor: Rising Sun, but it didn't get that good reviews and isn't that special either. But I had lot of fun with it in split screen multiplayer and single player.
People these days don't respect or value anything that is older than 6 months...let alone a game from 1997. Goldeneye was fantastic, period. Is it just as good now? No, that isn't even possible.

You would love Goldeneye: Source mod, then. It's incredible for a fan-made mod. I recommend downloading and reconfiguring the HD sound pack from Rare Witch Project. It really brings back that classic feel hearing the RCP-90 and Dostovei in high-quality.

Ooh, now Medal of Honor pre-Airborne is a perfect example of something that has aged really poorly. The one-year difference between Allied Assault and Call of Duty is astounding. I can't really explain why MOHAA has aged poorly when Goldeneye hasn't, though.

Also, that World Is Not Enough game on N64 hasn't aged as well despite ripping off most of Goldeneye's mechanics. Even in its time, it didn't get great reviews.

I actually worded that wrong. What I meant was, a person playing Goldeneye in 1997 could have just as much fun playing it in 2015. It's just that Goldeneye is no longer the gold standard it once was because much better games have come out. I'd still take it over typical COD-ripoff garbage like the remake, though.

I completely forgot about that mod. I remember following it and then it completely slipped my mind completely. Thanks for mentioning it. :3

I think it's aged poorly for sure, and I think a lot of N64 games have. I did like that you could overhaul the controls and the multiplayer gameplay though.

But once Perfect Dark came along I was done with it. Better everything minus the annoying slowdown.
It might be fun, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ if it controls awfully! That might be the fault of the N64 controller, but still.
Yeah, my biggest regret was not buying the 360 version of Perfect Dark back when I owned the console. The controls in the demo weren't quite up to modern standards, but they were a million times better than on N64.

Timesplitters 2 was arguably the best from the old Rare team, though. RIP Free Radical
There is actually a source version for Golden Eye 007 if anyone wanted to play that.
