This. Pretty much every other weapon is either bog-standard or a DataDyne Weapon. Dark is supposed to be a spy of sorts (even though massacring bases full of enemies isn't spying per se, it's more like force recon) and the laptop gun fits the image.
It is, but since it's not Perfect Dark: Alien Edition, it doesn't really fit with anything iconic about the franchsie.
TL;DR: The laptop gun stood out more I guess. Farsight could tear some ♥♥♥♥ up though.
It's one of the most recognizable weapons from the game Perfect Dark, which included aliens and alien technology. How is that not iconic?
Because the protagonist is a secret agent. Having a giant, glowing alien sniper rifle doesn't exactly go with the traditional meaning of that. It would be like having James Bond cart around a thug Barret Light-Fifty in gold plating or a Moonraker laser. Yeah, he did have access to the latter, once, but it's not iconic.
The laptop gun is sleek, high-tech, manufactured by her employer, and also unique to the Perfect Dark series. Nobody else I'm aware of ever made a laptop gun, but alien sniper rifles that can see through walls are as old as Predator. Plus, I'm fair sure the Farsight was developed in the wake of the movie Eraser.
Iconic should be inimical to the series, fit along with it like a good brand. The laptop gun fits these criteria, the Farsight does not. The first thing that would come to people's minds, if they'd never heard of the game, and seeing a laptop gun in her hands would be "high-tech agent." If they saw a Farsight, they'd be like "How'd she get that gun? Is she an alien? Is this game about aliens?"
See where I'm coming from?
Bond is not set in a futuristic, post-(limited)-contact world; of course he doesn't have access to alien technology. But via carrington/datadyne, Dark does. She gets a gun that lets her cloak. Does Bond? But it's surely useful for the type of action movie hero secret agent she is. Just like a railgun with x-ray vision. That's useful, and more importantly, memorable for most people who played the game.
Also, unless someone told you that the laptop gun is a laptop computer you probably wouldn't realize it from looking at it. And then you'd ask, why not just use a gun that's a gun? Also, the PD universe involves alien technology so of course there are aliens. Why they'd complain about the gun on loan from the Maians and not the floating Dr eyeswithoutaface is unclear.

Well, I guess you have a point, depending upon whether it's aimed at people who played the game. That doesn't seem iconic to me, it's more like an inside reference. As for depicting the laptop gun, you are right, it would be tricky, but simply including features common to laptops would make it clear. Keys in reconizable configurations, a logo on the back like an iBook, USB ports, that sort of thing.

I did. Crap. I meant inherent.
as for the farsight though, i think ill have to disagree that it is one of Joanna's more common arsenal. its definitely a beast, no question about that, but i see it as being similar to those blessed proximity mines in Goldeneye, everyone used them, they're some of the more popular weapons in the game, and they're extremely effective (and might i add CHEAP AS HELL, sorry i was the prick that always forgot where i placed my own and just get destroyed by those things). with that said though i dont really count it amoung 007s more common weapons, same goes for the farsight and Joanna. this goes double for the fact that the farsight is also alien tech, not carrington issue.
starting to see why this was such a hard decision for me? can you think of any others that might be more along the lines of her weapons of choice?
