AK47 vs SKS

I own a bulgarian AK74 and a yugoslavian SKS with grenade launcher and bayonet (launcher is decorative, don't freak out). I have owned both for a while and I must say I am confused as to why the Russians replaced the SKS with the AK series. The SKS only came out two years earlier and turns out to be more controllable, accurate, comfortable, and just plain balanced. The system is more reliable than the AK's and is heavily based on the PTRS-41 anti-tank rifle. Heck, the chinese pretty much skipped the AK series and opted to modify their SKSs to take AK mags with selectable fire. I think it was a pretty dumb move to replace a good rifle with one that doesn't measure up to its predecessor in more ways than it excels. What do you guys think?

They are civvied. No full auto and I live in the states.

Graarr. Here it comes. SKSs no longer have grenades produced for them. They came out in 45 and are considered to be a curio and relic item. It is like having an M1garand with a grenade launcher.

here is a picture of one. It is an old style rifle grenade launcher. Looks like a muzzle brake and most people think that is exactly what it is.

The AK is probably easier to produce in mass, i'm not sure but it might be a reason.

Well the AK does use stamped metal. You could make one far quicker I suppose. "shrug"
I have always thought of the SKS as one of the best forgotten rifles out there. I have seen it popping up in video games more often though. Makes me squee.

That's not true. The reason the AK-47 was chosen my the Soviet Union was because of the fact that it was fully automatic and was easier to load, depending on the model. The AK is a flimsy peasant's rifle with a loud as hell saftey on the wrong side. An SKS on the other hand, has better range and overheats less. It wasn't the main arm of nations, but if a couple of soldiers didn't have an AK, it would be an SKS.

I kill mostly paper targets myself, but it is surprisingly accurate. I don't doubt they have taken their fair share of deer and other furry critters that I can't bring myself to shoot. As for being better than an AK. I submit the following evidence as well. It is one hell of a versatile system.

Don't. We have our own share of problems and some would argue our gun rights are one of them. I just enjoy shooting at the range and wish everyone else would do the same. Not a perfect world though and yahoos abound.

Edit: If your Canadian I am sure you can get an SKS but the box magazine has to be limited to 5 instead of 10. Probably still just as fun. Dirt cheap too if you get a norinco.

Yes I am canadian. The gun laws here are pretty strict. most handguns that either have a short (less than 105 milimeters) barrel or are 32 or 25 caliber, full automatic weapons, guns with sawed-off barrels, and certain military rifles like the AK-47 are prohibited.

That they are. They have earned a reputation and are hella fun. That being said. I wonder if the SKS would have earned just as fearsom a reputation if properly given that chance. There are so many things the SKS does right. The chinese knew this when they built their uber SKSs. The raised receiver on the SKS in relation to the stock keeps the sights at eye level while shouldered. The AK's receiver sits much lower forcing you to scrunch over like some kind of deranged hunchback.
