Has gametop ever done this too you?
Hey sorry for the post here on steam but I found myself wondering why Gamestop has done this, or if they are ALLOWED to do this.

My mom gets me money almost weekly and I buy steam cards every 2-3 weeks. Most of the time its 2 steam cards. 1 for me, and my bro. sometimes I have her buy extra and we both get around 40$ each. Well things got a little tight with money so we cut costs and went down to just 20$ each, with the occasional 40$ for me VERY rarely since my bro doesn't know what to spend his on anyway.

today my mom went to Gamestop to buy me the usual, but this time an extra card; but gamestop told her that she was put on a limit, she can only buy 2 steam cards, the 3rd would mean she cannot buy another card for a month.

Is Gamestop allowed to do this, and is there anywhere else I can possibly get steam cards for steam money other then gamestop?

ive never heard of that before. that makes no sense. if they really did that just go buy a card at a different store. they have them at walmart and other places also.

some places that sell them in the US: GameStop, BestBuy, Target, Walmart, 7/11, Walgreens, and CVS Pharmacy

Ok, thing is, I had asked my mom to check with Gamestop (this guys are our friends, VERY friendly, they were the ones who reccommended we buy off steam instead of their store.) Anyway I had asked them if any other store sells steam cards, they said no, only Gamestop. We checked our local Walmart and they agreed.

try the other places? walmart here has them sometimes, they seem to be super slow reordering them.

Yeah I will, also my friend told me about using a visa gift card to get steam money. I can simply buy a 25$ 30$ visa card from wal-mart, and add the funds from it.

is there a reason your mom doesnt just buy you wallet funds through steam? may as well cut out the middle man. much more convienient doing it yourself from home.

Oh jeez I wish it were that easy. My dad is in a lot of dept with his card. Credit card is none optional. So we need to use actual money to get the funds, like from visa gift cards, or steam cards.

you can do that but be careful with prepaid cards, some of them charge you each time you use it, or have activation fees, etc. also alot of them you have to activate on a website first to use online.

I buy mine at a CVS down the street. Do you have a CVS nearby? Mine has them in $20 and $50 increments.

Gamestop can in theory do whatever they want. There's no law that says they have to sell you something unless it's discriminatory in some way. If they say people can only buy 2 cards per month then there's really nothing you can do to stop that policy as long as it is enforced globally.

Though I've never actually heard of this though. It seems a tad odd. I mean Gamestop doesnt care who buys those cards or how much. They get their money. And you don't appear to be buying so many that it would trigger some kind of fraud detection.

You could probably just buy it in cash. That way there's no way to track you or to enforce the policy.

@EldaBerry

Yeah I think we have a CVS nearby I asked my mom and she knew of it already. Its just we kinda don't want to cut these guys at Gamestop off. They are very friendly, but just recently when buying steam cards they seem to be more restrictive.

@Satoru

We do buy it in cash money. I believe about 6 to 7 months ago these new guys began working at Gamestop, very friendly- we bought games from them and we became a regular, where they actually looked the other way if we were a dollar or 2 short on cash and they would help pay for it. Eventually one of the employee's wanted to help us and said buy the steam cards, they have deals, and charge lesser then our store. Since then we only bought steam cards.

The employee that reccommended the cards said that he wanted to help us, but didn't want us to cut off buying form gamestop completely. I don't understand how Gamestop's profit gain is from steam cards, but do they lose money with each steam card purchase vs an actual game code?

Seems idioitc. Gamestop hardly sells any more PC games anymore. You're hardly 'cutting' into anything.

Sounds more like he's getting flack for 'attachment rates'. Where they have to attach nonsense to purchases like "hey do you want to sign up for X" or "we have insurance" or wahtever junk they have to push. Its not really their fault, they have to because their boss is telling hem to, and their boss is saying the same, etc.

I'm pretty sure Target and Walmart sell the cards. If Gamestop doesn't want your business (and they do stupid things that make you not want to shop there) I would head to those retailers and get the steam cards there instead.
