Grinding and why I enjoy it
So this is gonna sound a little weird, but i enjoy grinding in games. It just seems to make the experience more rewarding for me. I will pick up a random game if only for the fact that it involves grinding. For those of you that don't know, grinding is when you complete a task over and over again (usually defeating an enemy) for the reward that it gives. Most people that I know despise grinding in games, they don't believe that you should work so hard and spend so much time on one task. For me however, Grinding for levels, grinding for that one ultra rare item, or any grinding really is something that I think can make or break a game. Prime examples of grinding games include Borderlands (1 & 2), WoW, Destiny, Runescape, and Diablo. What do you think of grinding? Does anybody agree with my opinion?

Hate it, exploitative game mechanic that rewards being good little lab rat over actual skill.

Really love the SMT games for it. Grinding is even still pretty dangerous in Nocturne and DDS.
Screw grinding.

Also, you should try Disgaea.

If I want to feel rewarded, I beat the game without leveling up.
might as well be playing cookie clicker.
I agree to an extent. I wouldn't go so far as to say that grinding is fun or I enjoy it, more so that I don't really mind it. For example, when I'm grinding for a prefect variant of a certain gun in Borderlands I can just listen to my music and talk to a couple of my friends to just pass the time. In games like that I believe grinding is part of the experience which is why I don't mind it so much, but I do feel some games are unecessarily grindy for no reason and adds no real purpose or experience to the game. An example of this would be Dark Souls. I haven't played any of the "souls" games but I have watched plenty of gameplay on them and it seems like DS1 there was a lot of unecessary and unpleaseant grinding as opposed to DS2.
came in2 this thread thinking you meant something else.

Yeah, it's pretty enjoyable.

Oh it's the other one. It gets repetitive at times.

if I want to do something boring and repetitive, I'll do homework.

if I want to relax and unwind from a long day of lectures and studying, I play video games.

I do not want these two things to mix.

therefore, I dislike grinding.

I like finding new stuff too, but not if it involves blind grinding. There should still be something more and new to explore and discover in the process. New areas, new/alternate quests, other classes to try out. I dislike a whole load of MMOGs only just because they are so heavy on grinding. To me there is no deeper purpose in grinding. No good one at least. It's only there to bind people artifically long to a game. Something purposefully addictive. If a game can come up with enjoying gameplay mechanics or with other strong selling points there should be no reason for excessive amounts of grinding if you ask me. It's a "last resort" thing for those game devs that lack the skills or resources to make it an otherwise satisfying enough title. Or so are my impressions.

I enjoy grinding because in most of the games that I play that involve it, it usually gives you a decent amount of exp and loot. Even if you don't need the loot, you can usually sell it for game currency and with the exp, you can get yourself just a tad ahead of where you need to be and that gives you a bit of an advantage when you do continue the storyline or quests or whatever you have to do to move forward into the game. I've taught others that I've played on MMO's with how it helps them further their characters and such and they never even realized it lol

But some games only have the grind, SadisticDesires. Storyline? Interesting quests? MMORPGs hardly have any of that at all. Only a vague outline like "Ok, here is fantasy world, evil orcs threaten the world, now go kill them and ride with your bride into the sunset". I've recently played Path of Exile again, a Diablo 2 clone, and while APRGs have lots of grindish elements they at least offer you a more direct and rewarding feeling of progression. MMOGs I dislike for their very unoriginal and simply dull and boring approaches as to how their grinding elements are worked out. Don't get me on Korean MMORPGs - I've not touched any of them in a decade or so and don't plan to anymore. They are so awful and just clones of clones, horrid bastard childs of Diablo.

I can agree to a point Horatio, some games just make the grind the main focus and you sit there with drool falling from your lip as you stare at the screen saying to yourself in your mind, "There has GOT to be more then this...", however, on the very rare occasion you find a decent one. unfortunately, you tend to realize this and you try to grab on to it for so long that it too, become monotonous and then the process just repeats itself...ahh the things we do to pass the time and amuse our minds lol
I like grinding in games when it's optional and there's a good game outside of grinding, or when the grinding is fun. e.g. in the Persona games I really like the battle system so grinding is more entertaining. I like grinding for weapons in Borderlands because Borderlands is a good shooter on its own but has awesome loot to be found if you're willing to put the time in.
