What do people think are genre defining games?
Please share your opinion, thanks!

Right now of what I know (I've never played most of these games, just heard of them):

RPG: Baldur's gate
MMO/MMORPG: World of warcraft, eve online
Fps: Quake, doom, half life
RTS: Age of empires, warcraft, starcraft, Herzog Zwei
Turn based strategy: Sid meiers anything
JRPG: Final fantasy (obviously), chrono trigger
Idle: Cookie clicker
Platformer: Mario (what else?)
Music: Guitar hero
Horror: amnesia
Adventure: Zelda, tomb raider
Fighter: tekken, street fighter
Puzzle: Portal, minesweeper, angry birds
Arcade: tetris, asteroids
Video game: Pong
Racing: Gran turismo
Sandbox: Grand theft auto, minecraft
Hack && slash: God of war, diablo, devil may cry
Stealth: Metal gear solid
ARPG: Monster hunter
Satire: Kingdom of loathing

I have to disagree with a couple of your picks. I do not think we would even have amnesia if it wasn't for Resident Evil. That game is really the one that showed gamers that a horror title in gaming could exist.

As for your arcade titles... I would argue that Pac-Man played a big part in the arcades.

That's not a genre.

Not sure what exactly defining means, but I'll try.
Music: DDR
Fighter: Virtua Fighter (the jump to 3D graphics)
Arcade: everything from early 80's?

I would think the first Need for Speed was pretty changing. That game was made in conjunction with Car and Driver. It was supose to be the most realistic racing game out there, plus they used real cars and real car stats.

Like another poster said, I'm not sure what a genre defining game exactly is when it comes to definition, but I'll just go with some games that are extremely important in their respective genre I guess.

FPS: Goldeneye on the console side, Doom on the PC.
Adventure: Maniac Mansion
Strategy: Civilization II or Alpha Centauri

Two games would be Resident Evil and Silent Hill for the survival horror genre.

The Alone in the Dark and Silent Hill series are the true defining games of the horror genre. Resident Evil is a 13 year old's idea of a horror game.

I liked the third one, but that's mostly because it was the least "Resident Evil" game of the series (at the time). It did away with all the bad lore, silly background characters characters, and the Umbrella Corporation. It was the reboot it needed, sadly it didn't last.

Adventure: Stupid Invaders (I admit, haven't played goldies like Monkey's Tale, Grim Fandango etc. so I think too they are better)

Race: Need for Speed (any)
Simulator: RACE 07
TBS: Civilization 5
Tower Defense: Anomaly Warzone Earth
Horror: Clive Barker's Undying
