Broken Smartphone: what happened?
I absolutely have no idea what might have caused this kind of damage.

The smartphone is turned on with the screen supposed to show the home screen

Has anyone seen something like that before and can give me hints what the best thing to do? Do you think there is a chance some software trick can fix it, or is it more a hardware thing for a repair shop?

Thanks in advance!

Holy moly did you run over it with a car? Anyway it seems like the screen is cracked completely, must've taken a decent amount of pressure to achieve this much damage in one go so yeah definitely a hardware thing needs a new screen but not sure if it will be worth getting repaired depends on the model.

back pocket butt dialling to much?
I'm not going to bore you with the details, but I have a reason to suspect your screen is broken. Hopefully, not so broken you can't get a new one fitted.

edit: but if you really want the details it looks like it's been crushed so hard it shorted against something violently, and the few surviving pixels are perma set to full-on

That looks like the layers of the screen began to delaminate. Or the screen in some other way has taken some serious damage like a lot of force directly on top and spread across it. You're not fixing it with software. You might be able to get a replacement frame/screen that you could transfer the internal electronics into though. I've done this with phones in the past.
