Would Minecraft be Better With Notch in Charge?
I've been pumpin' water directly into my mouth from the fountain of knowledge and this lead me to the question: Would Minecraft be a better game if Notch didn't sell it to Microsoft?

I'm always against corporations taking over independent games they see potential in, not only you lose money in the long term if it's really going to be a huge success, it also kills off the original devs' intentions replacing them with corporations' usually bad perspective and understanding of the original design.

So what do you think, was the decision for the worse.. or for the better?

Minecraft would be better if Microsoft let us play without a Microsoft account.

Notch gave up the game to jeb long before he sold. Like once beds/iron golems came out, notch was already mostly checked out imo.

But microsoft has added censorship, gone to war with large conventions, added paid dlcs, etc..

This is a weird question for someone who claims to support and advocate for LGBT representation in games.

Probably, yeah.

I know that at least for myself, the last time I found myself caring about official updates was in 1.2.5, which was the final version of the game involving Notch.

Ever since then, it’s felt like the updates don’t add much of value that I feel a need to always be up-to-date on Minecraft. I could just play on whatever version and rely on mods to “expand” the game.

I think the only update to come after the Notch era that felt like a legitimate improvement - one where I wouldn’t want to play without it - is the update that expanded upon inventory controls. It’s the one that allowed you to do things like right-click and drag to even split a stack of items across multiple inventory slots, and other features like double-clicking an item to pick up every copy of that item in a given storage container or your inventory.

I don’t remember what update that was, but I’m pretty sure it was in like 2013-2014. Beyond that, the rest of MC’s additions feel pointless to me.

If minecraft devs weren't so damn lazy then perhaps such questions wouldn't be asked

Don't be so harsh on the poor minecraft devs. It's hard to do in a year what those pesky modder thieves can do in a week.

Didn't he already make millions even before selling?

Yeah, I’ve brought this up before in other places.

A game like Terraria introduces updates which add a ridiculous amount of new content to the game - to the point that people will actually start brand new save files every single time there’s a major version change. It’ll include a wide variety of new features, from new boss fights, to new types of weapons and armor, new enemies, furniture, and so on. And the result is that the Terraria of today is like 4x the size of the game which first launched all the way back in 2011, the same year as Minecraft’s official 1.0 launch.

Meanwhile, a new Minecraft update is usually focused on one, single, “major” addition, typically a new mob or type of building material like terracotta. And that’s it; that’s the central aspect of the patch that’s meant to get people excited to return to the game. It’s especially sad in the case of new mobs, because very often the mob itself doesn’t even do much of anything, and is there largely to just populate the game world and make it feel less empty.

Those games might’ve come out at the same time, but the difference in their post-launch support is night and day.

The worst updates ever to minecraft... And most of them happened post notch

Was the hot/cold biome system so you can travel forever to find a warm biome if you start in a cold.

Was Beds so you skip nights constantly, free of charge

Phantoms, double down on forcing the awful bed mechanic

Enchantments, over powered and broke all the balance. Mending made diamonds near worthless. It also nerfed Anvils greatly, because once you had your perfect mending gear, no need for anvils. Fortune 3 is OP, Efficiency can make tools mine so fast that phantom blocks are created.

New world gen that made every biome of that type feel the same

Electra/horses, immense nerf to minecarts and railways.

Addition of pointless real world mobs that do nothing, drop nothing useful. Panda, polar bear, Parrot, etc.

Adding Villager raids, just annoying

Combat update

Upgrading the difficulty of the ender dragon fight. (I wouldn't mind if the whole end wasn't gated behind it, meaning you have to do this chore every playthrough).

My apologies, I forget how difficult it is for the devs to create penguins.

IMO the last good update was 1.8. Slimeblocks let you do some pretty cool stuff with redstone, and 1.9's combat isn't in the game yet
