YouTube is the scourge of humanity
Just like Twitter, YouTube has been hijacked by politicians to bombard the public with memes. Neither were intended to be used this way but that's what they've become.

I'm not so soured on YouTube, my personal instance of the almighty algorithm is trained and well behaved currently.

I am soured on YouTube in comments on Steam. Some threads get bombarded with YouTube videos instead of facilitating actual discourse.

Wrong.

The most popular YouTubers are insipid. Mindless schlock that adds nothing to humanity.

Makeup artists have 3 million followers. The typical political YouTuber is lucky if they have 1 million.

they also have good tutorial on how made nice cake
You Tube is a great source of entertainment for me. All my favorite documentaries. Sports events of years past. Music.

The issue is the commercials for me. It's unbearable at times.

Exactly what I was thinking of when I posted this. AI is doing its part by making videos and photos of any reality you wish to post. The nonsense on social media showcases the damage done in society.

The wall of youtubers posted in OT will flood your recommended videos with politics. Even though I never click on them, I still see them creeping on my list. This is what they want, so I strongly suggest to everyone not to click on them if you want to preserve your preferred selections. Sometimes I wonder if Youtube isn't sniffing out my Steam posts. I know Facebook collects data from Google. If I'm planning a trip somewhere, that location magically appears on my Facebook feed.

YouTube is (or could have been) the salvation of humanity. In the past, when all we had was broadcasted tv, movies, etc... everything was signed off by politicians through the FCC. Nothing contrary to their narrative made it out to the public. Now you can watch hundreds of videos detailing suspicious elements of 9/11 for example.

If the tradeoff is that politicians get to post videos which I can ignore and tune my algorithm to avoid, then that's 100% worth it.

However, YT has shown signs of bending to political pressure. Their decision to remove the dislike button, although not stated outright, aligned closely with both Disney and the Biden admin getting the majority of their videos ratio'd in oblivion.

So it's not a perfect system. And it is susceptible to corruption and political influence. But it is far far better than what we had before.

On the flip side of the freedom of speech and information, is the quantity vs quality debate.

Institutions of higher education are expected to have refined and curated lists, a concentrated curriculum focused on quality.

The old system concentrated advertising dollars into an advertising block of time, generally associated with programming. Arguably, system did a reasonable job of bringing in competent and quality staff, while allowing for some variety.

This new algorithm system is subject to rabbit holes and echo chambers, which are bastions of corruption.

A definition of corruption is the closing of the mind. The silencing of critique, is the silencing of progress, the failure to perform preventative maintenance, the slot rot and decay of society.

Ads are the problem, not political channels. I also don't get recommended political garbage since I don't care to click on them in general.
