TV: Why does sci-fi struggle?
Why does science fiction struggle to become a cultural phenomena?

Why did Westworld, Raised by Wolves, and Dune Legacy fail to stick the landing and reach the pinnacle of popularity that Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad had?

Technically it is.
Why do you think the sci-fi genre is in crisis? New shows keep dropping all the time and a quick online search reveals plenty of summer premieres to check out.

* Murderbot (Based on Martha Wells' bestseller, this film follows a self-improving combat drone whose only desire is to binge-watch series, defying its protocols. However, it is continually forced to undertake perilous missions.)

* The Institute (based on Stephen King's novel, the film follows the story of gifted children who become victims of cruel experiments at a clandestine institute.)

* Twisted Metal

* Invasion

* Foundation (based on science fiction novel series written by Isaac Asimov)

* Alien: Earth

* Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

* Resident Alien
Why does Sci Fi struggle?

We see it all the time.
Comparing it to Game of Thrones, if you put Game of Thrones in space without cheats of tech can do anything and lets say lots of sciencey engineering things' you would have had a mega Sci Fi classic that 'may' have rivalled the cult following of Babylon 5.

It could have then inspired spin offs for the genre, because the vastness of culture that can become in different planets and star systems.

Lack of really genuinely good writing and storylines.
Somewhere in the creation process they don't think of Breaking Bad type of storyline for Science Fiction they think more along lines of generic and predictable acting responses.

Battlestar Galactica the remake, fantastic show, I am glad I came late to the party on it and did not see any of the critic online for it.
I watched it on a box set of DVDs and thought what a SCIFI!
It had layers.
A religious yet Sci Fi and peoples beliefs and superstitions and the weight it carries on a certain person.

It explored different aspects of life of the armada and the Cylons side what a great level of thought put into the characters and again layers.
Then there was some nice bonuses on casting .

I recently watched The Ark, as cheesy as it is initially I did find it addictive and am glad i watched all but the last episode which i'll save for a rainy day.
The Ark is nowhere in the scope of Game of Thrones , Breaking Bad or BAttlestar Galactica but for a nice contained show it works.

To sum up?
LAzy writing and possibly bad decisions and overbearance from network rulers.

I do stand corrected REsident Alien is a really good show yet i didnt consider it sci fi right now!
Really like it being autistic there are parts of him I cringe out of self awareness :p
- I don't come across as autistic in person but some of the things he says and thinks / reasoning I laugh.

Foundation, brilliant books.

Falling SKys was really good too .

Debatable.
Sci-fi is predicting the future, and the imagination off the mind is unlimited. So the wilder the prediction the wilder the concept into reality.... We tend to assume the world will be over and we will assume course to the stars and make up all this fantasy worlds and aliens... Plus what humans are going to be like and how we become conquerors and slaves etc...

If we based SCI-FI in actual reality, it is very boring and dull, and un-interesting. That is why in my mind we struggle to get it right at all. What sci-fi should be, is taking step by step and use human patterns as a starting point and take all political and social struggles into play and go from there.

Too far into the future, dilutes the actual truth and future that is going to be, to the future we want it to be
