Elemental magic, or a death scythe.. I also absolutely love all those effects where a demon or mage summons blades or guns out of thin air - whether by manipulating soul energy or multiplying them effortlessly. Because I’m nearsighted, I’m not a very good shooter.

smoothbore rifles were called rifles in reference to the use of cartridge ammunition, and their tendency to be used as irregulars and skirmishers one needs to 'rifle through' the terrain or formation to find.

there's also some obscurity about 'rifling' meaning to 'find ones target,' ie rifling through some papers to find the one you want, but this is a bit of the old dog and bone. an anachronism that appeared after rifles gained rifling to improve accuracy.

it was also sometimes used to refer to poking through things at random, hoping to find what you are looking for, which is the rough experience of being a long-range marksman when you have a smoothbore rifle. some suspicion the nomenclature was changed in order to remove this particular association, as knowing the guy standing way back taking potshots has no control over what's happening isn't reassuring. even if, strategically and tactically, they are helping immensely.

at least as long as they can manage to rifle through their uniform for a spare round, given that their weapon has 0 cross-compatiability with the rest of the army's.
