Large HDD for two content creators

I am putting together a gift for two people who create a lot of content, and was asked by a family member of theirs to get an external HDD to help store the media files. Some of this is nostalgic stuff like family videos and snorkelling & diving videos done on a GoPro years ago. My friend tells me that anything over 4 tb the tv has trouble communicating with and wondering if anyone has done this.
