Yeah, it sucks wasting time. It actually gets better as you gain more rating. You can take it slow and build it up more steadily while perfecting your play & mastering dungeons.
But the clear best way to gain rank to join high-level PUGs is to run your own dungeons. A few successful key runs to high-level keys will skyrocket your M+ rating.
