But for most things now I actually use a dip pen, and with that I use India ink which is essentially charcoal suspended in shellac. I'm thoroughly impressed with how smooth it actually is to write in such a manner. And one dip in the ink well with the tip I use for general writing purposes, will last for about half a page in a notebook.
For some tasks, like writing out a check/money order, envelope, and mailing it out, or filling out forms, I can do all of that in just one dip, easily.
So, just stop using cheap ballpoints and you'll be fine.
pencils are just annoying to use because they always break, you have to sharpen them, etc
You cannot sharpen a pen without making a mess and getting into trouble.
Pencils are good for math, drawing, the kind of thing where you might need to correct mistakes often.
Pens are good for visibility/legibility and immutability.
I tend to use pens a lot more since I discovered quality rollerball pens. I always figured you had cheap ballpoint pens and those enthusiast types that are by some standard beyond my understanding legitimately better, with the in between just being overpriced nonsense, but when I actually used my first rollerball, I swore I'd never go back to the cheap bic pens or whatever. There's a world of difference in both the visibility and the first stroke after opening it, a box of, say, uni jetstream 101 (what I currently use) is still priced at like a buck or two per pen.
Yes, like killing 3 guys in a bar. :P

However drawing digitally is even better 😀
